My patience is gone

My mom cries or gets furious about EVERYTHING. I used to be a kind and empathetic person and I feel like I’m turning into someone I don’t want to be. Example: My siblings are coming for Mother’s Day. They are flying and renting a car so we don’t have to drive an hour to the airport. I live nearby already. My mom threw a temper tantrum. She was hysterically crying and so offended that they would do this. She wanted to call and tell them not to come at all. I got her distracted and tried to understand what she wanted them to do. She would just say “I don’t want anyone doing anything!” Then late ..read more

Advice on caring for grandmother?

Hello all. My grandmother has been dealing with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis for about three years now, and now that she’s continually declining, I decided to start regularly going to her and my grandads house to help care for her . She is only 66, and has already lost her ability to say complete sentences that make sense. She talks, but a lot of it is word salad and met with frustration on her part when she feels we’re not understanding her. She is still continent, but often times wanders aimlessly around the house. Turning off/on lights, picking up the slightest dirt on the floor, closing/openi ..read more

Mom is 60 and memory loss has heightened.

Hi everyone, I’m not even sure how to begin but I’m struggling to get my mom to the doctor. For the last few years her memory has slowly started to go and then bam! These last 2 years it’s progressed quickly. I have gotten frustrated with her and learned to apologize or just not be as impatient. It’s so hard bc I don’t understand why this has to happen? Why do any of us need to lose our parents or loved ones to this awful disease? She keeps saying “sorry I’m having this memory issue” when she needs something repeated. She’s now asking for text to be sent after convos to help. She refuses to s ..read more

Does anyone have any experience (for themselves or their person with dementia) in trying to switch drugs to one less prone to expedite cognitive deterioration? I know there is evidence in some clinical trials to suggest oxybutinin worsens cognitive decline.... but can't seem to find as much info about the other two drugs. Thank you. submitted by /u/marathonmindset [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Has anyone had their loved one prescribed this? What was the result? Was there a slowing of progression? My sister is starting the infusions and I am concerned that it may be detrimental to her. The company says they see a 26% slowing of progression after 18 months. They also say there is a 37% slowing of daily living problems but doesn’t specify what they are. I would like some real world experiences if possible. submitted by /u/Merrywandered [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Reporting potential abuse in a care home

I’m not sure where to start really. My almost 88 year old nan with Alzheimer’s was moved to a care home after a UTI and hospital stay. She’s been there since late March. Everything seems great here from visits - staff are friendly, her room has a view of the garden with a little bird feeder by her window (she loves bird watching), it’s within walking distance of our home and she seems to have settled in well. The manager has said how much she’s improved since being there - she’s started coming out of her room now and talking to the other residents and the staff, she’s more chatty and more luc ..read more

She helped me by changing the water in the vase of carnations. While I was making dinner. She stood at the sink pulled out the flowers changed water..the Romaine was in a bag by the sink. Next thing I know..an edible arrangement. I didn’t know what to do. I left it. Told the kids and my husband so they wouldn’t come out and start laughing. She still hasn’t realized it. Should I dump them out before she wakes up?! submitted by /u/JackSmirking [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Are appetite changes & fluctuating taste preferences routine now?

My mom is in the 2nd stage of Alzheimer’s and we’ve been taking care of her FT for 4.5 years now. Her appetite is out of control, and she’s hungry or snackish all day long, yet won’t eat all or some of what we give her. We waste so much food. I cannot get a grasp on her food preferences. She will happily eat her meal, but will flat out refuse to eat it the next time we serve it. And on the other hand, she loves chicken, so she gets that in almost every meal, but she doesn’t like it in this meal, so she won’t eat all of it. And she loves mashed potatoes, but not the ones I’m serving her right ..read more
