First Snow Painting of 2024 After a mild winter with little snow, we finally got 6″ last week.  Woo hoo!  So excited to finally get out to paint the snow three days in a row before it all melted away.  As a bonus, all three days were brilliantly sunny. The first painting I did was on Saturday, February 17, 2024.  And it was COLD!!!!  Never got above 25°.  And the bright sun did little to warm things up. So I bundled up in about four layers of clothes and headed out to the forest. Plein air oil painting in Yellowwood Forest.Clumps of crystal snow in fact, it was so ..read more

GOLD + Christmas Art Launch Next Week! “Gorgeous Sunny Day in Yellowwood Forest”, 16″ x 12″, plein air oil painting by Charlene Marsh, #102617 16×12.GOLD When I was in my early twenties, I loaded all my worldly possessions and my dog, Colby, into an old Cincinnati Bell panel van and took off to drive across the country to California. I took several weeks, exploring old mud shacks on the open plains, Rocky Mountain streams, adobe cliff ruins, being in four states at once in a downward dog, and more. The month was October and I remember following a narrow mountain road up into the Rockies in Col ..read more

Longevity of an Oil Painting

Longevity of an Oil Painting Over the years, I have received inquiries about the care, cleaning, and protection of an oil painting to maximize it’s longevity.  I have done a lot of research into this and the conclusion is that oil paintings are extremely durable with basic, proper care. There is a reason oil paintings are king in the art world and maintain their value and beauty over time more than other mediums. Prepping Panels My hardboard panels are carefully prepped.  The face is sealed with GAC 100.  Next, two coats of archival gesso are applied to the front, back, and side ..read more

Growing up, I learned organic gardening from my grandma who had a huge garden where she and grandpa lived, right around the corner from my parents’ house. Grandpa and Grandma. One summer day, when I was bored, I asked her for something to do.  She sent me out to weed the carrots.  If you know anything about growing carrots, you know they have fine, delicate greenery and must be weeded very carefully.   After a bit of time, I went back inside and she asked me how far I got.  Much to her surprise, I told her I finished the whole row.   After that, my grandfather called ..read more

Secret Painting So, I am working on a secret, commissioned painting and I cannot risk releasing any information about it so that the recipients(or anyone else) don’t see it and ruin the surprise. Secret Painting Video Instead, I’ll share some pictures from my organic farm and a recent family visit.  Plus, a bonus recipe to naturally repel critters from your garden produce. 4th of July Celebration So, I took a mini vacay to Michigan to celebrate the 4th of July with extended family.  One morning entailed a three mile run/power walk (I don’t run on asphalt) and at the end I asked if a ..read more

Covington Art Fair So, I was at the Covington Art Fair in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this past weekend.  How this little gem of an art show has not been on my radar before now, I have no idea!   Perfect show!  I will definitely be applying again. Inquisitive, interested, well-heeled patrons, parking directly behind my booth, roomy enough to hang art on the sides, in a lovely, safe city.  Doesn’t get any better than that! Video This short video is a quick view of my booth at the show. New Lighting System I got a new lighting system from Propanels and a new battery generator ..read more

Summer in Yellowwood Forest 053023 S 36×48 So this is a new painting, “Summer in Yellowwood Forest”, 36″ x 48″, that immerses one in the summer, emerald green forest.  Even though it is a deciduous forest, it feels tropical with a rich green that envelopes the viewer.  Especially in the summer when it is hot out!  Yellowwood State Forest borders my property in Brown County, Indiana.  Yellowwood State Forest trail map.  Please note that my trail is not on this map.  I blazed it myself when I first moved here.  So it is a rogue trail.  LOL. Five short reel ..read more
