Ontario Massage Schools - Anderson College or Conestoga?

Anderson's program is 22 consecutive months (except Christmas break), 8am-1pm. I feel nervous about this one because it's a private college, which tend to be scammy and I'm not sure if I can trust it. But at the same time it's accredited by the province, seems legit, and could be a perfectly valid option. I worry that almost two full years of school non-stop would be too much. Conestoga is 3 years, with summers off, and you have to take some filler college courses (but I wonder if I could get those waived due to a previous university degree). It seems like a brand new program because they are ..read more

I had a horrible massage experience today. I've had lackluster massages before (in massage school, everyone starts out poor), but this was actively bad. The technique was bad, draping was bad, amenities were bad, the massage therapist didn't listen. There was a point during the first 20 minutes where my intuition told me to stop the session. But I chose to continue anyway. ? Now my sciatica is bothering me. How likely do you all think it is that I get a partial refund? submitted by /u/Mermaidman93 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Question to therapists about muscle knots

I'm an occasional massage client with a question for the therapists out there. There are three very sensitive "knots" in my body. One in my calf, one in my thigh, and one in my buttock. All are on the same side of my body as if they are aligned and it's painful when massaged. There is nothing comparable on my other side, and it has been this way for 30 years. Is this common? It seems odd. submitted by /u/yosh01 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Quit massage years ago, how do I began again?

Hello! I got my certification in 2018 and worked at a spa, then did my own mobile thing. Independent work wasn’t tiring but I did not have enough clients to make a living. The spa burnt me out big time and I wasn’t even working 8 hour shifts, only 5/6. Those 2 hour deep tissues killed me. I then broke 3 fingers roller skating and injured my shoulder ?‍♀️ so I threw in the towel and pursued another field. Recently I moved and am starting from scratch so I’m heavily considering massage again. Should I work at ME to get a groove back while building a mobile clientele? I’m not business savvy but ..read more

How to reduce hours?

I have been working for a spa for just under a year. I currently work half days Tues and Wed and full days Fri, Sat, and Sun. I recently interviewed at a new place and have decided to accept the new position in which I will be scheduled full days Wed, Fri, Sat. My current employer is open on Sundays while my new one is not. I am the only LMT on Sundays at the moment so I want to keep that day. How do I tell my current employer I’m now only available on Sundays? My employer works remotely from out of state and I generally only communicate via text. I was just going to text her saying “starting ..read more

Let me first start by saying that I am currently in massage training school, but I still love to get massaged by professionnals to get the benefits and learn from experienced LMT. So yesterday, I went to get a therapeutic massage for my tight upper trapeze and élévateurs de la scapula (sorry don't know the term in english). The LMT asked me to remove my shirt while we were in the consultation area, this is not a private room, anybody could walk by at any moment. He kept on insisting so I did it but it felt weird having other LMT walking with their client to get to their room. He said he had t ..read more

I am pregnant and expecting my first baby, and have been contemplating going on a spa baby moon. I have a lot of anxiety about this tho in that I am obese (about 305), and wonder if it would be possible for me to get a massage/have a typical spa experience. Any recommendations on spas are welcomed as well. submitted by /u/Remarkable-Ice7352 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Post cupping sharp pain? Normal? (28f)

I have been doing acupuncture for a few months. We did a cupping session. I understood going into cupping it was probably going to be uncomfortable but hey - no pain no gain? However, the after effects were a surprise to my acupuncturist and wanted to see if anyone has experienced this. I had a really hard time sleeping on my back and side for two nights after. When I woke up in the morning, behind my left shoulder blade next to my spine I had a really sharp pain. I couldn’t take deep breathes and felt hard to breathe. It took about 2 days to fully recover. In those two days when I would take ..read more

Prospective massage therapist (20F) any advice/information is welcome

I am strongly considering pursuing a career in massage therapy. I’ve tried the traditional college route as well as a full time med field assistant job route. Both experiences were positive and negative in their own ways, but I have always had an inclination to help people feel better both emotionally and physically which I feel the massage therapy profession executes pretty well. I have done a lot of research thus far and would just appreciate some more personal experience based info anyone is willing to share. I have also been reading a lot of mildly dated information from a few years ago o ..read more

Are there techniques or areas that massage therapists would otherwise address if they were not considered culturally sensitive or inappropriate?

It’s difficult to phrase this correctly. I’m not referring to explicitly sexual contact, although it would be interesting to hear opinions on that. What I’m trying to ask is if there are massage techniques that are generally not done because of some taboo or customary restriction, but given the therapeutic benefit MTs would use them if we were collectively okay with it. Just as a hypothetical, imagine it was highly offensive to touch someone’s scalp. So even though scalp massage is very helpful and relaxing, they couldn’t do it because of social norms. That kind of thing. MTs are trained in t ..read more
