Brownea grandiceps in the tropical glasshouse.
Brownea grandiceps is a species of tree in the family Fabaceae. Its common names include the rose of Venezuela and the scarlet flame bean. It originated in South America but is now widely grown as a decorative tree in tropical gardens.
The flowerheads can be up to 20cms in diameter.
The rose of Venezuela is native to Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Colombia where it grows in the tropical rainforest and is attractive to humming birds and butterflies.

On Monday 2nd January at 11am and until 1pm there will be a 5k fun run around the paths of the University Botanic Garden to get yourself in shape for the New Year. The event caters for all ages and ambitions, just walk or break the record! Your reward, as well as a good time, will include seasonal refreshments at the end of the run.
This event is weather dependent and up-to-the-minute guidance will be available here 3 days in advance.
