My work life can easily be summed up as follows: Preparing for an exhibit, or presenting an exhibit.
Since I just had a large show close, I'm back at the preparation part, rebuilding my inventory. I don't have any major projects happening just yet, or even have a major exhibit planned (that'll come after I have a variety of new work, both large and small, under my belt). But I am having fun doing some spontaneous painting exercises to keep my skills honed.

From a newsletter sent December 30, 2021:
It's almost the end of the year. I'm probably not alone in doing a little looking back and a little looking forward. For this newsletter, in the latter category, here are two new paintings, part of my upcoming May exhibition. And looking back, here's an older painting now available as a museum-quality print.
El Vaquero Cubano
Oil, 22x28", 2021
El Vaquero Cubano will be one of the highlight paintings of the upcoming show. Vaquero is the Spanish word for "cowboy". I visited a tobacco farm in Cuba in 2017, and t ..read more

I'm busy preparing for a new exhibit opening in May with approximately 25 new paintings, as mentioned in the August newsletter. In the meantime, some new business cards got me thinking about a previous exhibit.
Yep, that's me at my easel.
But this is only a small portion of the original painting, called Model Break (oil, 30x24", 2016). If you haven't seen the painting before, there's a lot more to it, and I'd like to share a bit of its story with you.

On June 16 I painted a model for the first time from life since March of 2020. Like many artists who work with models on a regular basis, I had to stop during Covid. Post vaccination, it felt great to work with model Kim, who posed in the backyard of an artist friend. The photo shows the start of the painting. I'll show you more progress in a future newsletter.
This is a demo from June 29. My classes are still being held on Zoom, so this was done in my studio while my Zoom students watched and worked on their own paintings.

In December of 2019, I received a phone call from my gallery congratulating me on the sale of my painting “Man With Violin” (photo above). The collector’s name was new to me, so I knew this was a first time buyer. I followed up with a thank you note and an email, and that began an email conversation that turned into phone conversations and eventually visits to my studio.
Thus began a journey that has resulted in 60 paintings of mine now in his collection.
From the collector: “In Richmond, I would make a point to visit Crossroads Art Center every other month, just to walk through ..read more
