Hey folks--Here's a new painting-in-progress currently on my easel, tentatively titled Model Break (24x30", oil on linen). When I came up with the concept, I had the model pose for small studies in my studio, which served as my reference material for this painting.
It's about 95% complete, and my goal is to have it ready for release later in May. I've included a short video for a closer look.

Oh, and since you are watching this on my website, you're getting a slightly longer version than what can be posted on Facebook or Instagram, plus it's shot in a wide-screen format that is not available on the social ..read more

Here's a video, filmed in my studio March 11, showing samples of the countless painted studies I have accumulated over the years. I keep them in a series of baskets scattered around my studio, and it's fun for me to flip through them occasionally. I would wager that most painter's work-time is spent on paintings that never see the light of day, or at least leave their studio. Whether for practice or pleasure, painting studies on regular basis is the meat and potatoes of growing as an artist. Like keeping a sketchbook, it's great to work without the pressure of th ..read more

Here's a selection of oil paintings of male subjects, figures and non-commissioned portraits, that I painted between 2008 and 2014. Prior to 2008, I had worked strictly as a commissioned portrait painter. After that, I branched out and began creating works strictly for galleries. Which meant I could paint whoever I wanted! These paintings range from simple head studies to complex narrative compositions. Most of these paintings are now in private collections, and I'm grateful to the collectors (mostly gay men, not surprisingly) who acquired the work, enabling me to branch out in a new career d ..read more

My weekly social media output on Facebook or Instagram generally consists of paintings spanning the last 15-20 years, dipping into the past or the present. The results, I think, give the viewer a sense of my entire body of work, and not just the limited scope of what's happening in my studio at this exact moment.
It occurs to me that my newsletter subscribers may not follow me on the social media platforms, nor my website viewers. So here's a sampling of some recent posts from Facebook & Instagram:
