Jamal Murray would have received a technical foul but not an ejection if officials had known Murray was responsible for a thrown item on the court during the Nuggets’ loss to the Timberwolves in Game 2 on Monday night. Crew chief Marc Davis was not aware the item came from Denver’s bench, he said in a pool report interview, otherwise the officials could have reviewed the incident under the NBA’s “hostile act trigger.” A review would have resulted in a technical foul but not an ejection. “For an ejection, you would have to determine it was thrown directly at somebody versus thrown in frustratio ..read more

Renck: Oh Baby! Even without Rudy Gobert, Timberwolves leave Nuggets crying in frustration.

Oh Baby! The Timberwolves were better without Rudy. Let’s hit skip on the diss tracks and talk of a Nuggets dynasty. Those drunken words at the downtown parade seem like a long time ago. In what amounted to a must-win game, the Nuggets delivered a first-half performance that belonged in a diaper, losing 106-80. Everything suggested the Nuggets would rebound like Dennis Rodman. Monday demanded urgency, a path made easier by Rudy Gobert’s admirable decision to miss Game 2 to be with his partner for the birth of the couple’s first child. Even before Jamal Murray acted childish, throwing his heat ..read more

In the quiet and calm of an off day at Ball Arena, the Nuggets were at ease with the discomfort of their situation Sunday after losing a close series opener to the Timberwolves. But coach Michael Malone had an honest assessment of his team in response to a reporter’s question after Denver’s film session. How was Malone feeling about his squad’s level of hunger and desire to repeat as NBA champions? “At some point, man, you’ve gotta stop doing the same thing. We’ve gotta do a better job, and our starters in particular have to do a better job of being ready to play and setting the tone early,” M ..read more

Initial thoughts from the Nuggets’ blowout loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Monday night. The hunters are prowling and the hunted look… vulnerable: Can a championship hangover show up in the second round? Maybe not, but Minnesota’s been a pummeling migraine of a headache for Denver the past three halves and took powerful hold of this series with a Game 2 beatdown. The Nuggets are the hunted. The Wolves look in their element hunting and are leaving town with two games forcibly in hand. Conventional wisdom: Denver would find its championship fo ..read more

A Colorado bill to ban the sale, transfer and manufacturing of many high-powered, semi-automatic firearms is set to die Tuesday amid opposition in the state Senate, a month after the measure passed a historic vote in the House. Sen. Julie Gonzales, the bill’s Senate sponsor, announced in a statement Monday that she would shelve the bill voluntarily during a committee hearing Tuesday, the penultimate day of the legislative session. The Denver Democrat said she wanted to continue conversations around the policy in the coming months, “outside the pressure cooker of the Capitol during the las ..read more

Nearly everyone who joins the Colorado Avalanche from another NHL organization has their own story about when they learned that this place was different. Josh Manson has been in Colorado since March 2022, so he’s had the chance to watch plenty of new teammates go through the same experience. The veteran defenseman’s own education came a few days after he was acquired in a trade from Anaheim — at his first morning skate. “I was tired,” Manson said. “I was like, ‘Man, this is tough.’ The speed is just way higher. I was exhausted.” Now, Manson said, “I hear a lot of that from the guys when t ..read more

You feed a Moose in the wild, they get ornery. Then they want more. The last two times Avalanche winger Mikko Rantanen scored twice in a playoff game, he scored twice again the very next tilt. “I think you’ve got to elevate your game after every round. And like I said before, it only gets harder for the team, so it gets harder for individuals too,” Rantanen reflected in advance of the Avs’ second-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series with the Dallas Stars, which starts Tuesday night at American Airlines Center. “I think we’re going to face a tougher team next round. Where’s Chris Finch? Timberwolves’ unusual bench setup illuminates another Nuggets connection: Micah Nori.

When Michael Malone peers down the sideline toward the opposing bench, he doesn’t see the Timberwolves coach everyone is familiar with. He sees someone even more familiar. Malone has always carpooled to work with assistant coach Ryan Bowen, but it used to be a three-man ride share during the first three seasons of Malone’s tenure in Denver. Back then, the flights home had a tendency to immediately follow a loss. The Nuggets weren’t a playoff team. Micah Nori brought critical equilibrium to the drive home. “I’m a little competitive. A little emotional, so they say,” Malone said this March, when ..read more
