Ignore the red circle, this was to show a friend where I saw the shaft moving while they were pushing and pulling on the prob. New to me boat, bought late last year (have sailed it, and used the engine etc). Getting ready to launch for this year and noticed some play in the prop shaft (if I push/pull it towards the gear box). I don't know much about the setup inside the coupler where it meets the gearbox. I tried to budge the two set screws on the coupler, they were seized so will be back in the next couple days with more tools, penetrating oil, heat etc. What I did notice was that if I ..read more

Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ve wanted to learn to sail since I was young and finally going to go about learning. At this point I don’t see anything beyond a laser in my immediate future. I’ve looked at classes locally and there’s a club which does lessons on lasers which is rather affordable then everywhere else has you on a big boat. My question is, is it worth learning on a full boat or should I work my way on a laser and go from there? Ultimate goal is to have my own boat but first I need to get the wife’s approval which won’t be coming soon. Thanks! submitted by /u/mcmi ..read more

Have you bought a boat in Mexico? From Cortez Yacht Sales? An interesting boat has jumped into my price range but have not bought a boat internationally. What was your experience? anything you would have changed?

Found this on the underside of a Columbia 27. Topside is a pool of gross oily water. Is this some kind of engine compartment plug? submitted by /u/assaulted_pretzel [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m a novice crew member for weekly sailing races. I’ve sailed in the races for about one and a half seasons, but I don’t feel like I’m understanding some of the concepts related to trimming sails because I’m not immersed in sailing other than through our weekly races. I find that I learn concepts best when I regularly interact with a topic, and reading books is a great way to do that. I’d love recommendations for books that use sailing terminology and that have descriptions of weather/wind/water conditions and how the sailor responded to them when sailing. submitted by /u/CatbuttKisser [vis ..read more

I'm counting down the days until we can start the season with our new 29footer -- since there is not much else to do other than wait, might stock up on some cool gadgetry or quality-of-life stuff. What are your favourites? I'm looking for both literal sailing gadgets, but also all kinds of boating accessories, lifestyle stuff etc that has made your life heaps better. I already obviously own a brass sextant :D submitted by /u/siretsch [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Looking for any protips from folks who have done this run in the last few years. We are 6ft draft, looking for easy in easy out refuel stops or best ports of refuge if (when) weather goes bad. Or just general info. We have charts and a cruising guide, but would love some first hand detail. submitted by /u/whyrumalwaysgone [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
