Found this on the underside of a Columbia 27. Topside is a pool of gross oily water. Is this some kind of engine compartment plug?

I’m a novice crew member for weekly sailing races. I’ve sailed in the races for about one and a half seasons, but I don’t feel like I’m understanding some of the concepts related to trimming sails because I’m not immersed in sailing other than through our weekly races.
I find that I learn concepts best when I regularly interact with a topic, and reading books is a great way to do that. I’d love recommendations for books that use sailing terminology and that have descriptions of weather/wind/water conditions and how the sailor responded to them when sailing.

I'm counting down the days until we can start the season with our new 29footer -- since there is not much else to do other than wait, might stock up on some cool gadgetry or quality-of-life stuff. What are your favourites? I'm looking for both literal sailing gadgets, but also all kinds of boating accessories, lifestyle stuff etc that has made your life heaps better.
I already obviously own a brass sextant :D

Looking for any protips from folks who have done this run in the last few years. We are 6ft draft, looking for easy in easy out refuel stops or best ports of refuge if (when) weather goes bad. Or just general info. We have charts and a cruising guide, but would love some first hand detail.

Howdy! I'm eager to learn how to sail this summer. I spent some time out on Lake Ontario last summer and loved it. I completed my state's (NY) boating safety course but still want to practice and learn the mechanics of actual sailing so I can do it responsibly and safely. I (graduate student) also don't have a boat to sail on. Someone at the local yacht club suggested that I join the local chapter of America's Boating Club (aka United States Power Squadrons). I couldn't get a sense of whether it was worth it and wanted to get a sense of other's experiences with joining those kinds of groups ..read more

I’m looking to find some places to sail a small sailing dinghy (13ft) in OC nj. I’m interested in some back bay protected areas (I’m a little scared of the inlet lol)
I’m a novice so any recommendations on spots or advice feel free to leave it below.

Hey crew - I’ll be moving from San Diego to Long Beach. I have our Catalina 22’ with little outbound motor on it. It’s in a slip in Mission Bay San Diego and I have a slip open in Long Beach.
There’s not a lot of content online about this sail north so I’m looking for some advice and insights from this sub.
I’m an experienced day sailor (ASA 101 and 103 certified) who will be on our boat with an older, very experienced sailor that’s a family friend.
Our current plan is mission bay - Oceanside, Oceanside to Newport, Newport to long beach. We plan to complete the sail sometime late summer.

Not quite ready for a sailboat (soon, I hope) but live in Puerto Rico and getting ready for a potentially severe hurricane season. I’d only need it to run my fridge (it’s an inverter fridge), starlink, a fan or two and charge a couple small devices. I know next to nothing about solar but figured it would be an easy way to start learning. Plus I’d like the ability to keep it safe during the storm and deploy it afterwards. Have a generator for back up but there’s always gas shortages after a storm, the bigger the storm the longer it lasts. Any good place to start? I’m in the process of adding u ..read more
