More than 1.4 million older adults in the United States live in senior living communities and nursing homes. Between 2015 and 2050, the world population of people aged more than 60 will almost double, from 12% to 22%. As the aging population increases, senior living communities increasingly are incorporating the comforts of home to meet the needs and wants of residents and prospective residents. Many feature various activities and amenities to make stays as comfortable as possible. In Canada, 474,000 older adults live in senior living and care communities. A Canadian-based long-term care home ..read more

AI’s impact is just beginning — for better or worse

Several senior living operators touted the new ways artificial intelligence is helping the field during a Tuesday session at Argentum’s Senior Living Executive Conference in Phoenix. Early payoffs include better job candidate screening, operational efficiencies, improved resident services and healthier bottom lines, they noted. The prevalent vibe seemed to be that when it comes to the benefits of AI, we’ve only just begun. And that is true, for reasons both good and bad. For while AI certainly offers the promise of help in virtually every aspect of senior living, its rapid — and in many ..read more

3 keys to selecting board members for nonprofits

Brandon Kastner An enormity of challenges face nonprofits navigating the world of increasing costs, skyrocketing interests rates and the competition for scarce talent. In many organizations, the combination of dynamic organizational leadership and keen directional oversight from an informed board of directors help the nonprofit chart its course through the challenges ahead. That being said, not every organization has the best of both worlds — a competent chief executive and a knowledgeable board. Advancement through the changes in the market is essential to organizational growth of a nonprofi ..read more

Old age isn’t what it used to be

As a journalist striving to bring you the latest news and information of interest as you directly or indirectly serve prospective senior living residents, current residents and their families, my eyes light up when I hear about a study that purports to be about “older adults.” Imagine my disappointment when I start reading it and realize the study is about 50-year-olds. The study still could be an interesting read, but in my mind, 50 is not old. People’s ideas of “old” may vary. Many today might say that, generally speaking, “old” is the 80s and older. Of course, some individuals may age mor ..read more

Photo: Morsa Images/Getty Images More older adults have stopped taking some medications, possible evidence that efforts to stem overprescribing may be working. Data culled from the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging found 80% of adults aged 50 to 80 years were willing to stop taking one or more drugs if their healthcare provider said it was possible. Those with a health problem or disability limiting activities of daily living were more likely to say they take too many medications. Many observers link the pandemic’s end to shifting attitudes about medicine. “The more involv ..read more

We all share responsibility to support older adults adequately

Marta Hill Gray In today’s challenging economic environment, low-cost assisted living communities serving older adults are few and far between. The waitlist for an independent living apartment at our senior living community, Culpepper Garden, currently is more than two years long. The waitlist for our assisted living wing is even longer.  As we mark National Fair Housing Month, we must recognize the growing number of older Americans without a roof over their heads — millions of them forced to live on very low incomes, unable to afford housing, food and medical care. As it stands, the Uni ..read more

John O’Connor It’s a bit exhausting to keep writing about ways good intentions from our regulatory agencies keep fueling disastrous outcomes. The latest blow came earlier this week with an announcement from the Labor Department. It unveiled a final rule aimed at broadening overtime protections for salaried workers. The new overtime rule will see the salary threshold climb from the current $35,568 to $43,888 by July 1 and subsequently to $58,656 Jan. 1. The initial raise follows the department’s existing methodology for determining the threshold, whereas the subsequent increase adopts its new ..read more

Who could have seen this correction coming?

John O’Connor When it comes to the bottom line, more than a few senior living operators now find themselves hitting rock bottom. It’s bad enough that growth and revenue projections they counted on for 2024 are simply not going to happen. Worse, still, the numbers might trail what was recorded a year ago. Many corner office types are demanding answers. After all, there should be plenty of reasons for continued optimism: The customer-base demographics have never looked better — and will only improve. And there’s no shortage of dealmaking going on, as eager buyers snap up whatever communitie ..read more

(HealthDay News) — Northeastern US seafood consumers may be exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) concentrations that potentially pose a health risk, according to a study published online April 12 in Exposure and Health. Kathryn A. Crawford, PhD, from the Environmental Studies Program at Middlebury College in Vermont, and colleagues surveyed 1,829 New Hampshire residents in June 2021 to determine consumption frequency, portion size, types and sources of seafood among adults and children (aged 2 to 11 years). Additionally, the researchers purchased the most commonly consumed spe ..read more
