The second North Tyneside Social Badminton tournament of the season took place recently in the sports hall at John Spence Community High School, North Shields. It attracted 40 players, some of whom travelled from Morpeth and south of the River Tyne to take part. The tournament was once again organised and run by the excellent volunteers from Bewicke BC, which plays in the school sports hall on Tuesday and Friday evenings during the season, and also runs a summer club, assisted by volunteer helpers from North Tyneside Badminton Partnership. GIRLS The County round of the girls competition was held at Tyneside Badminton Centre. 9 teams took part in the KS3 Girls and 8 in the KS4 Girls.  Results below – KS3 Event  Royal Grammar School Ponteland High School Newcastle High School for Girls KS4 Event Royal Grammar School Newcastle High School for Girls Longridge Towers RGS won both KS3 and KS4 events; they progressed  to the Regional round at Thornaby on 19th March, playing the winners from the Durham and Yorkshire rounds. The 17-21 English County Challenge (ECC) took part the weekend of 6th & 7th of April at York RI. The annual Northumberland Championships, part of the Badminton England Senior Gold Circuit, saw some 80 of the best players on the circuit congregate at the Tyneside Badminton Centre, with 41 entries in the Open Singles the most for some time. Congratulations to Northumberland’s Lucy Dodd who today became U17 mixed doubles national champion with Dan Kemp from Cumbria. Northumberland’s Para badminton star Will Smith, who is a member of St Gabriels BC, recently travelled to Rotterdam, where he took part in the Para European Games, a multi-sport event.  Badminton was one of the featured sports.  Will had a very successful trip, winning a bronze medal in Men’s Singles and a silver medal in Men’s Doubles. Will has won numerous awards, medals and trophies both in the UK and abroad since his teenage years, and he carried the Olympic Torch in 2012.
