America’s Failure — Impunity for Abusers

On Saturday Feb. 13, 2021 DJ Trump, now a private citizen, was granted his second acquittal by the U.S. Senate as the capstone of his second impeachment trial. Republican Senators simply will not or cannot quit Trump. They might portray themselves as helpless victims of an abusive boss. But they had, for the second time, the power to convict him and prevent him from ever running for office again. They CHOSE to let him get away with his misdeeds. For this second impeachment, the crime was a President who launched an insurrection against the legislative branch of government. And for gratuitous ..read more

Hal Holbrook’s Genius Ends at Age 95
Workplace Bullying Institute

Woke today to the stunning news that Hal Holbrook died (actually on Jan. 23, according to his NY Times Obituary). To me, he was no ordinary actor. He was Mark Twain, author Samuel Clemens, late in life turned speaker on the worldwide circuit to replace earnings lost on failed investments. Holbrook was 29 when he donned the makeup and white suit to inhabit the Twain character. Holbrook brought his one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight, to off Broadway in 1959 and last performance on Broadway in 2005 at age 80. He last performed Twain in 2017. I estimate that I saw Mark Twain Tonight live at least ..read more

Workplace Bullying Institute

On Jan. 20, 2021, newly inaugurated President Joe Biden addressed his nearly 1,000 appointees to his executive branch agencies. In the video clip to the right, he made the following remarks: “Treat people decently” “We work for the people” “We owe your families. You are going to work like the devil.” “Everyone expects to be treated with dignity” Then, at the 6:00 min. mark, he made this bullying-relevant remark: ” … if you are ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect… talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot. On the spot. No ifs ..read more

Shame on OSHA
Workplace Bullying Institute
by Gary Namie

Over the years well intentioned people have suggested that OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is an adequate and appropriate agency to police health-harming workplace bullying. If OSHA were to guide employer prevention and correction, the argument goes, then no new law (the WBI Healthy Workplace Bill) would be unnecessary. The phenomenon does seem to fall within OSHA’s responsibilities. We counter that OSHA is hopeless and helpless. By definition, it is a regulatory agency. And there are state-level OSHAs. OSHA proponents seem unaware that the federal government has abdicate ..read more

Is our “will to live” norm also abandoned?
Workplace Bullying Institute

It’s hard to imagine a stronger fundamental human need than the will to live. However, in the face of real death or long-term health complications from COVID-19, Americans are showing mass stupidity. Here are some recent takes on that stupidity. The no-maskers, hoaxers and denialisms love to say COVID is “only 1% fatal.” But many more Americans suffer in the “long-haul.” Here are the numbers. Let’s get real about the virus’s impact. Read this moving essay (originally a string of 17 twitter tweets) from a Jewish physician treating a Nazi-tattooed COVID patient. Wondering how many o ..read more

U.S. is failing COVID social experiment

The wearing of masks has been shown to be effective (for example, see this study) at preventing community spread of the coronavirus. It saves both the mask wearer and others nearby. Yet, there is a significant number of politicians in powerful roles with the ability to shape public opinion who believe that masks (and other virus prevention tactics) are unnecessary. Sadly, trump made this a partisan issue. So, no-maskers are from one party. The prediction that nearly 100,000 LIVES CAN BE SAVED if over 90% of Americans wear masks has been widely known. Not sure they got the memo and shared it o ..read more
