What to do with abandoned hive and frames?

Hello, I installed two new hives at a site where a previous keeper has lost their bees years ago and just left the hive in place. I’ve had the hive moved from the site but and wondering what the best thing to do with the old equipment might be. I have no indication of what went wrong with the hive in the past but there’s a strong smell (not unlike rotten banana alarm pheromone) and evidence of wax moth and hive beetles. My gut tells me to harvest the wax then burn the boxes and frames. I’m looking for confirmation and perhaps some advice as there is a good amount of honey left in the frames I ..read more

New Nuc Install Timeline

This is my first-year beekeeping and I've gleaned tons of good information from this community already so thank you all. I'm in southern Missouri. I just installed my first 5 frame nuc on 4/20 into a 10 deep frame Langstroth hive. I put 5 empty frames with foundation on the outside of the nuc frames. Since install, I've feed the bees 1 round of sugar syrup and 1 1-lb pollen patty to help them get started. Upon my last inspection (yesterday, 5/9) everything seems to be ok. There are definitely more bees now than when the nuc was installed. The nuc frames are completely full now, but the new, e ..read more

Turning Queen cells upside-down - harmful or no?

Is turning a queen cell upside down while looking at the frame going to harm the queen after the cell has already been capped? Why? I’ve heard this from a couple of YouTube beekeepers and am wondering if this is relevant to my situation. Context - Very new beekeeper but I have watched a lot of YouTube videos and have a beekeeping mentor. NUCs arrived and were placed in hives on the 26th of April. First hive inspection Queen was spotted and marked 3 days after that. Yesterday second inspection, 10 days from first inspection and hive has no eggs and can’t find queen, lots of capped brood, and a ..read more

Hive moved into mobile chicken coop

After reading some posts on this sub I realize it’s not realistic to try to “move” the hive elsewhere. The whole point of the mobile chicken coop is to move it around (3-4 meters at a time every few weeks). With the bees inside, is it advisable we don’t move it anymore? What would you do? Appreciate any thoughts! submitted by /u/Nz_cat [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I bought a bee house for the mason bees, and I have residents! Two holes are sealed, two were quite packed with pollen, and there were five little faces looking at me when I turned my flashlight on ??? submitted by /u/Mundane_Chipmunk5735 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Junk I bottom of hive

I have a hive that is failing and I'm trying to figure out why it's slowly and painfully dying off. I bought this nuc in the beginning of April. It was supposed to have a 2024 queen in it and was treated for mites. I never found the queen and I stopped finding new eggs ~2.5 weeks ago. In a hope to save it, I put a frame with day old eggs in it, from a strong hive, 2 weeks ago hoping they'd requeen themseleves. Today I did a hive inspection hoping to find a queen cell or a new queen. Upon inspection I found no queen cells, no new eggs, no queen and the limited brood was all the capped and ..read more
