earthstory:
Another timelapse video of some more progress made on this 18” Diplomystus dentatus from the Green River Formation - a fish which hasn’t seen the light of day for 50 million years. This particular fish is from the 18” layer which is slightly harder material to prep but it’s all worth it as the preservation of fish from this layer (versus the split fish layer for example) is far better and they have a lovely glossy black/dark brown coloration. Still plenty more to go on this fishy but thought I’d share an update.

The specimen in the photo displays both common habits of this hydrated aluminium phosphate, spheres and radial sprays (bottom) of needle shaped crystals. Irregular masses can also form, and, very rarely, prismatic crystals.

By Linsly Church
In 1903, Carnegie Museum of Natural History purchased an enormous private fossil collection from the Baron Ernest de Bayet of Brussels, Belgium. Over a 40-year period the Baron had amassed a collection comprising tens of thousands of individual fossils. At age 65 he married a much younger woman and sold the collection to fulfill her dream of having a house on the shore of Italy’s Lake Como. Within the collection are fossils from all over Europe. Fossils from Italy include the Monte Bolca fish collection, which contains about 290 beautifully-prese ..read more
