Det skjedde i Canada ..read more

One of Thelonious Monk’s greatest compositions – and aren’t they all great? – is “Evidence.” Its groove is as infectious as its rhythmic language of displacement and discovery is complex, rhythmic intricacy that it would be too simplistic to call syncopation, but there’s so much more. The fact that it grew out of “Just You, Just Me,” not to mention the various traditions birthing that standard, adds another layer of reference and connection; layers of communal discourse similarly inform tilting curvaceous, philosopher, composer, and saxophonist patrick brennan’s most recent s0ni ..read more

Listening to The Selva makes me feel like I am in on a secret, their music is a clandestine whisper in my ears, and I like to listen with headphones. The message moves slowly, it oozes, it delivers in little hits, like dopamine, its takes over, and I acquiesce obligingly.
Camarão-Girafa, the Portuguese trio’s fourth album, delivers the same addictive substance as their others, evolving, changing, keeping it exciting, while more than meeting expectations. The group is cellist Ricardo Jacinto, bassist Gonçalo Almeida and drummer Nuno Morão, growing names in the world of free impr ..read more

Vancouver clarinetist extraordinaire François Houle is a consummate virtuoso whose free improvisation is among the best in the field, and who can meet the demands of the most demanding new music scores. In addition to his performance skills, he is a most savvy composer and arranger, as testified to in this debut release with his Genera sextet, recorded for the Portuguese Clean Feed imprint. Leading a lineup of trustworthy accomplices such as pianist Benoît Delbecq and trombonist Samuel Blaser, Houle pays tribute to a man who actively promoted him—the late founding artistic dire ..read more

BREW features Miya Masaoka on koto, electronics & monochord, Reggie Workman on contrabass, percussion, musical saw & didgeridoo and Gerry Hemingway on drums, vibes, voice & electronics. I recall a gig by the Reggie Workman Ensemble at the Old Knitting Factory in the early 1990’s and the personnel included Marilyn Crispell, Don Byron, Gerry Hemingway & others. The group played two long sets that night and I remember being blown away by it. Both discs from this two CD set were recorded around 20 years apart. Disc One was recorded at two places: 2 track ..read more

Znakomity, ultranowoczesny tryptyk zafundował entuzjastom improwizowanych brzmień saksofonista i kompozytor Marek Pospieszalski. Po albumie „Dürer’s Mother” i „Polish Composers of 20th Century” jest kolejna odsłona: dedykowany polskim kompozytorkom album „No Other End Of The World Will There Be”. To swoisty, jazzowy Poczet Kompozytorów Polskich.
Marek Pospieszalski w tegorocznej ankiecie krytyków magazynu Jazz Forum został uhonorowany tytułem Muzyka Roku, a jego album „Polish Composers of 20th Century” wybrano Albumem Roku. Podobne nagrody spłynęły do artysty w ramach prestiżowego Grand Prix M ..read more

Spennende kromosomer
Her har Mário Costa (37) satt ..read more

Bringing together the Norwegian jazz quartet, or two of them, with Dojo, the Japanese improvisational koto and drum duo, was an inspired bit of experimental madness. One that works marvelously. Recorded live at the classic hole-in-the-wall underground club Aketa No Mise on a tour during the middle of the pandemic, the four musicians not only unite their wild imaginations, unique techniques, and musical breadth, they put out a ton of energy.
Kicking off with “Dust Devils,” the four musicians use electronics p.r.n. with strings or percussion or effects along for the ride, to cr ..read more

The quintet project Tilting Curvaceous is saxophonist/composer Patrick Brennan‘s sixth leader/co-leader date since the late 1990s. His duo recording Terraphonia (Creative Sources Recordings, 2019) with guitarist Abdul Moimême demonstrated a strong affinity for free improvisation within unconventional settings and uncommon concepts. Brennan is joined by trumpeter and flugelhorn player Brian Groder. The native New Yorker has been a long-time fixture on the NYC jazz scene and has devoted a significant part of his career to the frequent use of free-form styles. His work includes ..read more
