Mayday Fuel Assumptions

The documentation indicates that Mayday Fuel is declared when you expect to land below final reserve. Sounds simple enough, but is this based on the assumption you will get a direct to final after the Mayday is declared? Or does it include a routing with more track miles such as a star? You could end up declaring a Mayday on the basis of flying an entire star only to be given a direct to final and end up landing significantly above final reserve. What would be the consequences of this ..read more

Just seen on BBC News website. Quote: Birmingham Airport has temporarily suspended flights due to a security incident on a plane. The airport had an emergency call from a plane and the situation was "very serious", according to a passenger on another plane at the airport. Belfast City Airport told the BBC the flight involved was due to land in Belfast. A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: "The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew have disembarked. "All customers due to travel should make their way to the airport and check in as normal." Several flights at the airport ha ..read more

Ok webby, this might sound a stupid one. Logging in top right corner you enter your name, it then goes to remember me and then password. Logging in on the main page if you have made an error, it goes enter your name, password, then remember me. As a watch the keyboard typist, could the remember me box not be moved below the password window on the top right hand sign in window, so the both match, thus preventing me entering the password into the remember me window and getting an error message if that makes sense? it is just so frustrating.. Told you it might sound stupid. NL ..read more

Conversations on the forum often focus on money. I’d be interested to hear opinions on which airlines are genuinely happy places to work, small and large, worldwide. What are they doing right? Are most of your colleagues happy, both forward and aft of the flight deck door? Are you looked after by your managers ..read more

Angle of attack and pitch attitude

I've just read Bill Palmer's book 'Understanding Air France 447', and I'm a bit puzzled when he mentions the aircraft at times having a very high angle of attack (30 to 40 degrees) when at the same time the pitch attitude is around 8 to 12 degrees - I can't visualise how this is possible, surely if the AOA is that high the nose must be pitched up at a similar angle? I'd have thought that the only significant difference between the two angles would, for example, be due to the wings being at an angle to the fuselage horizontal centreline. Disclaimer - I'm not a pilot, just a very interested and ..read more
