Found out Dad had life insurance; they are saying death payout is only 250.00?

So Dad passed away a few years ago, and we just found out he had life insurance at some point. We filed the claim, sent in all the paperwork, and are now being told it was a whole life policy, and the payout is only 250.00. They will not tell us anything else unless we get a court order to get a copy of the policy and won't go into details of why the payout is only 250.00 OR what the amount of the policy was. What would cause such a low payout? I do not know anything about life insurance, so flying blind over all of this. submitted by /u/Sarcasticwhisper [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I heard life insurance is one of the best ways to fund a special needs trust. My parents are of middle class and I’m disabled. How do you get a high coverage policy (at least three million) if they’re not super rich for a special needs trust? submitted by /u/Adventurousss33 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

So I recently reached out to New York Life and found my insurance would be a bit cheaper through them. I currently have two whole life policy through American Income Life. One policy is 5 years old, one I just added extending the whole life. Speaking to the New York Life agent, the total for both would be cheaper, but if I just cancel the new policy and replace it 1 for 1 that would be where most the savings would be. This is entirely out of my wheel house so I want to make sure I am not making any huge mistakes or overlooking anything. Is there anything I should look out for or issues I migh ..read more

I'm late 50s, wife is mid-60s and we do not have life insurance. Neither of us smoke, use any drugs, and we drink one or maybe 2 drinks/week. We are in good health and normal weight. I have had diabetes in the past which is for a long time completely controlled (i.e., A1C in the 5s) with weight control. 3 young adult children. We have a pretty complicated financial life, and have done very well for ourselves (through decades of very hard work and some luck). I like the idea of leaving for the kids and protecting them against an estate tax bill, but that's as far as I've gotten. I am thinkin ..read more

My mother is worried she will be left with the bill for my aging father when he passes. They have no retirement savings. Is there a way a child can purchase life insurance for a parent? I don't want my mom to be left with nothing and have to work until forever for her. submitted by /u/Direct-Island-8590 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I think I already know the answer to this but I’m still going to ask. My mother passed away one month ago and she had a $100,000 policy. She told me a couple months before she passed that her current husband was the sole beneficiary, but that’s not what she wanted. She had cancer and the last 6+ months of her life were essentially constant pain and discomfort. She intended to add my brother and I and my 4 nieces and nephew to the list of beneficiaries. Unfortunately, her quality of life was so bad she never got to changing anything. So here we sit, one month later and her husband is still the ..read more
