When I was a pack-a-day smoker, everything about my day was controlled by the thoughts of smoking and getting my nicotine fix.
I was a slave.
“Deep down, I knew I was a slave. I just denied it.”
From the moment I woke up, the thought of smoking remained at the forefront.
Eating became secondary, along with sleeping, working, taking care of my pets, myself, and my apartment.
If I didn’t have cigarettes, then I couldn’t do anything.

Things we do that we know we’re not supposed to do oftentimes make us feel regretful about the decision we made.
Why did you do those shots? Why did you buy that pack of cigarettes? Why did you go home with that person?
The list goes on and on.
“The feeling of regret is felt across many facets of life, and it’s all based on the decisions we make.”
I’ve been having a difficult time not drinking.
I’ve made it almost 14 weeks, which is an impossible number for me to begin with. It’s amazing!
But I’m a bartender, so I’m around people who are drinking for hours at a time.
But that’s my choice.

There are many times in my life where I made a stupid decision to relapse, and it ended up being for no reason at all.
Sometimes you can justify in your mind that it absolutely is the right thing to do at that moment in time.
Like if you were at the coolest concert ever and you’d only been off smoking for like 2 days, then you’ll totally justify relapsing.
And I can understand that.
I’ve been there many times.
But you most likely wouldn’t have put yourself into that situation of having to decide in the first place if you knew 100% that you were going to a concert in a few days.

We all know what firsthand smoke is. It’s the actual inhalation of cigarettes or cigars that goes into the lungs and causes damage.
Secondhand smoke is the indirect inhalation of all that exhaled smoke from the smoker.
Bartenders are good examples of innocent bystanders, as are spouses, children, and pets of smokers.
“Thirdhand smoke is the transfer of toxic chemicals found in cigarettes and cigars through touch.”
When someone smokes inside the house, where do you think that smoke (containing all those chemicals) goes?
Does it dissipate completely?
The answer is obviously no, but here’s what ..read more

Being sick sucks regardless of when it happens.
We all go through it, and it’s almost impossible to avoid.
But I have to tell you that the difference between being sick as a smoker and being sick as a non-smoker is like night and day.
“Being sick as a non-smoker isn’t even that bad.”
Yea, you still have to go through the process.
The itchy eyes, the runny nose, the sinus pressure, the coughing, the wheezing, and possible body aches and fever.
But you know what?
It’s not nearly as intense as it was when I was a smoker.

As we grow older, our bodies and mind start to age.
We get more aches, pains, decreased energy levels, and a plethora of other ailments a lot more often than the average 21 year old.
Those of you who are getting up there know exactly what I’m talking about.
“Nobody wants to grow old prematurely.”
We all want to be as vibrant for as long as possible.
I, myself, want to live to be 100 years old. I don’t want to die young because of some preventable disease.
I am not naive. I know everybody grows old eventually. I’m not always going to be able to compete physically with a 21 year old.

When you read about people quitting smoking, or hear them talk about it, the majority of the time it’s all about avoiding lung cancer, or reducing your risk of heart disease after a certain amount of years.
That’s all well and good, and I think most smokers and non-smokers alike already know that stuff.
But what I keep telling people is that lung cancer, emphysema, and other diseases happen further on down the road.
They’re something in the distant future.
Yea, it’s great to prevent, or avoid, those diseases. Anyone will tell you that.
The greatest benefits of quitting smoking, however, are t ..read more

E-cigs are one of the greatest inventions of this century, in my opinion.
Finally they invent a smokeless cigarette that contains nicotine.
“Vaping changed my life.”
Quite literally, actually.
I’m a huge supporter of this method to quit smoking, and here’s why:
NO SMOKE OR TAR BUILDUP – Electronic cigarettes involve water vapor, not smoke, so that means there is less junk being clogged in your lungs.
When you smoke a cigarette, around 90% of the smoke you inhale STAYS in your lungs and doesn’t get exhaled right away.
Over time, that can lead to some serious tar buildup, which leads to coughin ..read more

I quit for one main reason: I was tired of that life.
I was tired of being a person who relied completely on nicotine to get me through the day.
Everyday I would go through the same motions: getting up and smoking, finding an opportunity, smoking in private, and thinking about when the next time will be.
It was awful!
I WANTED A NEW LIFE – As the years progressed, I saw everyone around me getting promoted, getting married, having kids, living happy lives, and just enjoying themselves.
That wasn’t me. I hated my life.
I wanted a new one, and I was determined to do it.

These have been around for decades.
My grandfather used them, and I’m sure many generations before him did also.
Not as common today as they were in the past, but still a present form of smoking, although mostly used by older folk, mainly men.
“Essentially, smoking a pipe is just like having a cigar.”
You aren’t meant to inhale any of it. Just puff on it and enjoy the flavorful fumes in your mouth.
Or so they say.
Sure you’re not supposed to inhale anything, but is that a guarantee you won’t? No!
The process is simple.
You buy a pipe in whatever variety and color you want. You buy a pouch of ..read more
