Was autism also under-diagnosed in the late 90s/early 2000s?

I belong to an autism group on Facebook and I see a lot of people who are like 40+ being told that theirs probably flew under the radar because it wasn’t being diagnosed then. I was born in 96 and was wondering if it was frequently missed in my child years too? I don’t think I was a “classical” case because apparently I talked so much veins would pop out on my head, inappropriate comments in public about strangers, I couldn’t sit still, clapped my hands repeatedly and paced. I made friends occasionally and loved playing with others but I was definitely seen as weird. By the end of elementary ..read more

While I'm really glad autism has become more known/mainstream, sometimes I feel like people accept it until autistic people exhibit traits they don't like

I've seen stuff on tiktok/memes about autism (usually the cool/quirky aspects of it but some stuff that's legitimately informative) and I think that's good and I'm glad that more people are understanding it/view it in a more positive light. What I really don't like though is it seems all that support and acceptance goes out the window when an autistic person has weird/cringey interests/expresses themselves in a way that doesn't hurt anyone but isn't "socially acceptable", doesn't understand social cues/makes social faux pases/doesn't understand a joke that was meant to be obvious/basically do ..read more

Does any other autistic adults have nobody besides family?

It’s seems my final friend group and I have drifted away. At this point in my life, except family, I have nobody I can rely on. In a sense I’m kind of glad to be done with that friend group, but trying to make new friends at 30 has been hard. I feel like a loser, and I guess I am. I would love to change to this but any attempt so far has been met with failure. By nature I guess I’m not somebody others consider important, and I really don’t mean that to sound like a self-pity comment, it’s just how it goes sometimes. submitted by /u/CMZ1993 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I took a screen of the first image from a reddit post, and I posted it in my friends' discord channel called "pets-r-us." Then one of the mods tells me that it doesn't belong there. Before I go on, I'm gonna add that this is not the first time this situation has happened. There have been other things I got yelled at for posting, because I did it in the wrong channel. So I message one of the other mods and ask how it's in the wrong channel and, well, you guys can read it for yourselves. I'm so sick of people expecting me to read their mind and what's worse is I'm actually worried that I'm ..read more

This is a really weird one. All my previous jobs were very all over the place during the day. No day was the same. But at the beginning of this year I moved across the country and got a job as a cleaner. I've been working here for nearly a year, and I have developed an extremely strict routine. I clean all the same rooms in the exact same order everyday. Even down to what order I do my cleaning tasks in. Even tiny things like which direction my cloth goes when wiping the sinks or what directions I hoover in. Everyday I finish each task at the same time. Bathrooms are clean by 5:20, Hoovering ..read more
