No trip to Japan is complete without a trip to Kani Douraku for the Lin family - see my last post on them here! We had some plans to go for lunch as they have cheaper deals at lunch - which is the case for most fancy/more expensive places, but when you're on holiday mode there's just so much to do in the daytime. We weren't super hungry that day (we had just come back from the hamburg place with no exercise in between) so we didn't order a lot. I also forgot to take photos of the shabu-shabu (the main thing we were there for) so look back at my previous post! We weren't keen for raw c ..read more

As we have visited Osaka before, we decided to have a more laidback trip this time and find some places that we haven't been to yet. We had a late start to the morning as we didn't have much planned for the day. First stop: Luke's Lobster I didn't get to try it out from the food truck in Tokyo on my last trip, so I was set on trying it out this time. Lucky for me, they now have a shop in Shinsaibashi, which is super convenient. They open at 11am and when we got there about quarter-past, there was no queue at all and we instantly got our hands on the rolls. All four us got the Lobster Roll ..read more

Osaka...the tourist hub of Japan. I think most people who have visited Japan would be most familiar with Osaka as it is one of the more easier accessible locations from abroad. This post begins our 5-day stay in Osaka, which included various day trips to nearby places.  I didn't take many photos in Osaka for a few reasons - it's my third time there and I spent most of my time there shopping (or tagging along to someone who was shopping). For this stay, we booked the Candeo Hotels near Dotonbori, ensuring that we were close to all the attractions and food. The hotel was quite new and bo ..read more

Lake Kawaguchiko

Although our goal of this trip was seeing Mt Fuji, why not enjoy the lake while we're at it? We were headed for Osaka later that day, which would take about two also hours. With sunset at around 4:30pm and not wanting to trying to find our way around in the dark, we planned to take the bullet train to Osaka at around 1:30pm. The bullet train leaves from Mishima, which is about an hour or so from Kawaguchiko station by bus (tickets for the direct bus are ¥2,260, local buses are cheaper, but they do involve a interchange at Gotemba). However, the bus only comes once an hour so I bought tickets ..read more

There was a break in posts due to some technical difficulties. I'm also looking into the lag in loading photos as well But we should be able to go ahead full speed from now on! On my previous trip with our family we were unable to see Mt. Fuji due to poor weather conditions. I know you can do a day trip to see Mt. Fuji/Five Lakes region, we decided to stay overnight to ensure that we get an opportunity to see the glorious mountain. Mt. Fuji is viewable from a whole range of places but we chose Kawaguchiko for our stay as my research told me that it was most developed area in the Fuji Five L ..read more

Tokyo: SABAR+ by Shinmei

Saba (or more commonly known as mackerel) is a very popular fish in Japan. Essentially, every teishoku place will have a mackerel dish. After visiting Ginza, we decided to head back to Ueno early as we haven't had the chance to properly explore the stores in Ueno. Most stores close relatively early (approx 8pm) so we were kind of forced to have an early dinner. As we were already in Marui Department Store, we chose the cutely decorated SABAR+ for dinner. We ordered 4 different styles of mackerel so we could test which method was best. We got a Shio-yaki(鯖塩焼き定食; ¥990), Katsu-don  ..read more

After a satisfying breakfast and walk at Tsukiji markets, we headed to the nearby Ginza to walk off the calories. Before heading to Ginza, we visited the nearby Tsukiji Hongan-ji as I didn't have a chance to visit on my previous visits. The temple against the blue sky was really beautiful, despite the coldness of the weather. As soon as you step through the gates of the temple, there is an instant calmness steeply contrasted with the buzz of the fish markets.  The statue kind of reminds me of Master Shi-fu from Kungfu Panda. No idea why. We also took a walk within the temple. There wa ..read more

Tokyo: Tsukiji Markets

No trip to Tokyo is complete without a trip to the Tsukiji Markets for a seafood breakfast. This visit was even more important as the Tsukiji Markets will be moving away from their current historic site to another location at the end of this year. Not being particularly keen for waking up at the crack of dawn to line up for the famous sushi restaurants, we headed into a tiny restaurant called Tsukiji Itadori Higashi Store in a random alleyway. Compared to last time, there seems to be a greater emphasis on grilled sea urchin. Having not yet tried it, we headed in without a second thought ..read more

After lunch we decided to explore the nearby Omotesando and Harajuku area. Instead of taking the Tokyo Metro, we decided to walk from Shake Shack to Harajuku right through the middle of Omotesando. The walk was pleasant and you'll definitely notice that you've walked into Omotesando when you come across flagship stores of these massive brandnames. Knowing that I couldn't afford anything, I spearheaded for Takeshita-dori in Harajuku. Holy! At first I though Omotesando was relatively crowded, with constant streams of people walking up and down the street that you'd actually have to take care w ..read more

This was the one place that my sister was adamant that we go to in the two weeks. Having been before, I warned them of super long lines. From memory, I waited in a queue for 45 minutes to order.  I expected horrible queues as we were there exactly at lunchtime. However, to my biggest surprise, there was no line at all - straight to the counter. I think it's mainly because they opened up a whole bunch of stores in Tokyo, which is good in a sense. The biggest problem with this store is not queuing up to order, but to find a seat afterwards. You essentially have to lock down a table and awk ..read more
