“Every dead child is a loss for all.” This past Thursday, hundreds of people dressed in black gathered in a silent, solemn processional through midtown New York City, to mourn the thousands of children killed during the October 7th Hamas terrorist attack on Israel and the Israeli bombardment of Gaza that has followed. The procession was more like a funeral than a political rally. People marched silently in twos to a mournful drumbeat, holding up signs with photographs of Palestinian and Israeli children who have died since early October, and carrying effigies of deceased babies wrapped in whit ..read more

Hutton Brickyards

Drawing of an original brick shed at the Hutton Brickyards, ink and pastel. I drew this on site in Kingston, NY while in residence at the Brydcliffe Artists Colony in Woodstock, NY. This reportage drawings and others of abandoned brickyards along the Hudson River were the inspiration behind the paintings and glass castings that were featured in my solo show, Material Memory, hosted by Emerge Gallery in 2023. Every time I see this  I think of the sunny July day that I drew it, and how wonderful it is that the current Hutton Brickyards hotel kept some of this original architecture. It is a ..read more

Hair’s up
One Drawing A Day

I don’t know if I did this woman’s hair justice, but it was the reason I drew her. She had so much hair just all wrapped up and there was something very unusual about her hairline. Sometimes that’s all it takes to make me get the pen out and draw. Greg Betza ©2023 ..read more

I made a quick trip last week and saw this great couple sitting in the airport lounge. Great mostly because of her sculpted white hair. I did not exaggerate that much in this drawing! Greg Betza ©2023 ..read more

Xochimilco
One Drawing A Day

I’ve wanted to visit Xochimilco, the “Venice of Mexico City,” ever since I saw my friend Kati Nawrocki’s brilliant reportage of it. And I have to say, it did not disappoint! Color galore, beautiful greenery and friendly people, the Mexico City staples, plus our own personal mariachi band playing for us as we drifted along on our trajinera: it doesn’t get better. Not to mention the interesting history of the precolonial canal and  chinampa system, which makes Xochimilco a World Heritage Site. In my opinion, all of Mexico City should be a world heritage site. What a place – can’t wait to re ..read more

Sunflowers
One Drawing A Day

It was my daughter’s birthday this week and I bought her a few sunflowers. She’d never shown any particular interest in them, but they were beautiful so I bought them anyway. What a great idea that turned out to be. She’s been carrying them around all week! One of the flowers in my drawing snapped at the stem, but when a 5 year old gets a hold of you that’s what can happen. Greg Betza ©2023   ..read more
