Public Health England (PHE) is carrying out the fifth national survey of HIV testing in community settings. They are asking all providers of HIV testing in community settings for information on the number of HIV tests that they carry out, which they will include in the national HIV 2021 report and which will be published towards the end of the year. Shigella is a bacterial pathogen which causes infection and can lead to severe diarrhoea and hospitalisation. Shigella is an overlooked pathogen as a sexually transmitted infection and health professionals’ knowledge about it and the current situation is very low. Public Health England (PHE) and HIV Prevention England (HPE) are launching a campaign which will focus on raising awareness of shigella amongst gay and bisexual men (GBM). Activities for the campaign will start on Monday 28 June 2021. Shigella transmitted by sexual contact in GBM has been on the increase in England since the start of 2018. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 saw a reduction in diagnoses, but as England emerges from lockdown we are seeing increases in the North West and Manchester, South East and London. The next phase of the It Starts With Me campaign will focus on raising awareness of good sexual health and wellbeing as England continues to emerge out of lockdown. The campaign will launch on Monday 17 May 2021 and will continue until the end of June, with minimal social media promotion starting Thursday 6 May 2021. Update on the National HIV Prevention programme

The contract for National HIV Prevention programme has been in place since 2016 and comes to its conclusion this year. Public Health England is currently progressing through the required approvals processes, with the intention of going out to procurement for the National HIV Prevention Programme shortly. We’re proud that National HIV Testing Week (NHTW) 2021 was an outstanding success despite being a very different event to the one we are all used to. This NHTW our partners across the sector continued to show passion and enthusiasm as they engaged their local populations, albeit virtually and largely through social media channels this year. Little is known about the sexual health needs and knowledge of trans and non-binary people making it challenging to design effective health promotion and clinical services for them. In November 2019, Terrence Higgins Trust conducted a survey in sexual health and HIV knowledge, attitudes and experience which aimed to address this.
