London: Researchers are in the process of discovering the factors responsible for the production of antibodies that do not just fight one virus strain, but neutralises almost all known virus strains.
This kind of neutralising antibodies are produced by a small number of people who are infected with HIV-1.
Previously, the team led by the University of Zurich (UZH) and University Hospital Zurich (USZ), discovered that the virus load and the diversity of the viruses, the duration of the infection, and the ethnicity of the affected person can all influence the body`s immune response.  ..read more

New Delhi: One of the deadliest diseases to have gripped the world is HIV/AIDS, which has caused the biggest, long-standing challenge for scientists – a vaccine/drug to cure it.
The research on procuring an effective vaccine or a drug is underway and scientists have come quite close to a final result.
Meanwhile, in what can be called a breakthrough, a team of researchers has developed a capsule that can deliver a week's worth of HIV drugs in a single dose.
The advance could make it much easier for patients to adhere to the strict schedule of dosing required for the drug cocktails used to figh ..read more

New Delhi: One of the most deadliest diseases to have gripped the world is HIV/AIDS, which has caused the biggest, long-standing challenge for scientists – a vaccine to cure it.
The research on procuring an effective vaccine is underway and scientists have come quite close to a final result.
When infected with the HIV virus, humans cannot produce the required antibodies to kill it, which is why the HIV vaccine has been a challenge to develop.
However, giving HIV patients new hope, researchers have designed a novel experimental vaccine that spurs animals to produce antibodies against sugars th ..read more

New York: Researchers have found that an investigational HIV vaccine regimen was well-tolerated and generated immune responses against the deadly virus in healthy adults.
The findings by APPROACH -- an early-stage clinical trial -- are based on "mosaic" technology that combines immune-stimulating proteins from four different HIV strains, representing different types of virus from around the globe.
The new vaccine regimen -- called as "Ad26 mosaic" -- were well-tolerated and capable of generating anti-HIV immune responses in healthy HIV-negative adults.
Importantly, Ad26 mosaic was found ..read more

London: Three decades after approval of the first-ever AIDS treatment, HIV medicine is seeing a new wave of innovation with scientists reporting positive data on Monday for improved drug cocktails and a novel experimental vaccine.
Adding to optimism is the success of antiretrovirals in preventing infection - an approach known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) - as well as growing hopes for an eventual "functional" cure that may keep the virus at bay without drugs.
Researchers believe such advances are necessary to stay ahead of a virus that can all too often develop resistance to medicines ..read more

The research on procuring an effective vaccine is underway and scientists have come quite close to a final result.
Now, in a first for immunisation in a totally unexpected turn of events, scientists are taking help from cows to develop a vaccine that would help tackle HIV.
As per the scientists, cows have the ability to produce special types of antibodies that can neutralise HIV, which humans lack.
When infected with ..read more

Washington: The first HIV vaccine efficacy study in seven years has begun in South Africa to test whether a modified vaccine candidate can provide effective protection against the AIDS virus, the US National Institutes of Health said.
The study -- called HVTN 702 -- aims to enroll 5,400 sexually active men and women aged 18 to 35 years, making it the largest and most advanced HIV vaccine clinical trial to take place in South Africa, Xinhua news agency reported.
"If deployed alongside our current armoury of proven HIV prevention tools, a safe and effective vaccine could be the final nail ..read more

Canberra: In a significant progress toward vaccinating people against HIV infection, Australian scientists have come up with a right approach to creating a vaccine for the deadly virus.
A team of researchers from South Australia's University of Adelaide and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital have used a common cold virus to introduce their DNA-based vaccine into the immune system of laboratory mice, Xinhua news agency reported.
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infects cells of the immune system, destroying or impairing their function.
Researchers said they were able to create ..read more

London: A new research may have found out a possible cure for HIV infection.
UK scientists and clinicians working on a groundbreaking trial to test a possible cure for HIV infection said that they have made remarkable progress after a test patient showed no sign of the virus following treatment, reports the Guardian.
The research, being carried out by five of Britain's top universities with NHS support, is combining standard antiretroviral drugs with a drug that reactivates dormant HIV and a vaccine that induces the immune system to destroy the infected cells.
Antiretoviral drugs alone ..read more

New York: Scientists have found that continued semen exposure in sex workers sustains changes in the cervical and vaginal micro-environment in a way that may actually increase HIV resistance.
The findings may lead the way to better preventive strategies that block the transmission of the virus and improved designs for future HIV vaccine studies.
In some areas of the world where HIV prevalence is higher, a small number of female sex workers continue to test negative for the infection despite repeated sexual activity and low rates of condom use.
However, the reason as to why these wo ..read more
