Sengoku Youko – 12
Lost in Anime

I’m going to continue hoping this one cour business was always the plan, and we haven’t been struck by some sort of extinction event like we were with Hoshiai no Sora.  Because never would the phrase “just when it’s getting good” be more apt than if Sengoku Youko were simply ending after the prologue.  It would be like Rurouni Kenshin (a series featuring the same actor in a leading role) ending before Kyoto, I suppose.   But there was never much chance that was going to happen, even if the production committee was cagy with broadcast plans.  With Mizukkami, I don’t ..read more

Patron Pick Winter 2024: Dosanko Gal wa Namara Menkoi (Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!) – 12 (End) and Series Review
Lost in Anime

If we’re honest, any romance anime airing right now is going to come up short when being compared to BokuYaba.  That’s not fair of course, and I managed to really enjoy Dosanko Gal wa Namara Menkoi without thinking much about that.  But it does occur to you with an episode like this one, which trades pretty heavily in the conventions of the genre.  Personally I think this series is a little sharper in the way it handles them than most seem to give it credit for, but it’s still somewhat beholden to them at times like this. I’ll get to the elephant over there in just a bit, but ..read more

Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san (Mr. Villain’s Day Off) – 12 (End) and Series Review
Lost in Anime

No way I bury the headline here.  I love, love, love Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san.  No series could epitomize that elusive sub-genre of shows I recently wrote about better than this one.  Yet it’s also unique among them, and one of the best of the lot.  I placed it #10 on that list when I wrote it a month ago, and it would certainly be higher if I performed the same exercise now.  It’s genuinely profound and truly deep, and those are not words I cudgel freely where anime goes.  What a gem it is. Interestingly, the anime flip-flopped the OP and ED for the sec ..read more

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) – 24 (Season Finale)
Lost in Anime

I admit the list isn’t a long one, but Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is certainly near the top for light novel adaptations I’ve liked in recent years.  Most of the LNs that really clicked for me are much older, from a time when the term meant something quite different, and recent examples are few and far between.  It serves as a useful reminder for me that there’s quality to be found in the medium, and not to dismiss it entirely and out of hand.  The problem is that so few adapted LNs stray from the formula and traits which weigh most LNs down. The Apothecary Diaries&nb ..read more

Sousou no Frieren – 28 (Season Finale)
Lost in Anime

I’m certainly calling this post a “Season Finale”, even if nothing is official at this point.  And I probably would have even if that “The journey to Ende will continue” message hadn’t flashed at the end of this episode.  Series as hugely successful as Sousou no Frieren don’t just stop.  The question of timing isn’t a simple one – the manga used 60 chapters, which is just less than half the currently available material.  As such a second season could theoretically already be in production, though the production committee might want to wait a ..read more

Dungeon Meshi – 12
Lost in Anime

No question about it, Dungeon Meshi took a decidedly dark turn last week.  I would say all the hints have been there, but it was amusing to see how taken aback a lot of new viewers seemed to be.  One of the core elements that makes this series what it is (one could even argue the core element) is the contrast between the tone and the actual content (though both got pretty serious last time).  I’m never totally sure if Kui Ryouko wants us just not to think about, or (more likely) to stop and think about it sometimes and be freaked out. And we ..read more

The Lost Weekend – Website Update

To all LiA readers, commenters, and supporters, I want to apologize for the downtime the site suffered these past few days.  At the moment we appear to be back (obviously, if you’re reading this) but there are still some issues to be worked out.  A brief chronology: Is essence, this site’s WordPress theme is outdated.  I love it, but it’s no longer supported and crucially, it does not support 8+ versions of PHP.  As such, there have been some ongoing stability issues which crescendoed this past Friday.  As a stopgap measure, I was forced to migrate the site to a new an ..read more

Sengoku Youko – 11
Lost in Anime

It was another strong episode of Sengoku Youko, but I was a bit distracted by the unofficial news that this is apparently going to be a split cour.  It was announced as 37 episodes with no mention of a split, but MAL has changed the listed count to 13 and Syoboi doesn’t show it as airing in Spring.  That would suck altogether, especially since the second arc is when things get really great.  But where Mizukami is concerned I always fear the worst with anime, as if a curse hangs over his work.  Maybe this was the plan all along but it’s odd it was never mentioned, if so ..read more

When it comes to Dosanko Gal wa Namara Menkoi, I don’t swim with the current to say the least.  It really seems like the manga readers constantly moaning are straight trippin’.  Like, balls.  I just don’t get why they’re so upset.  I don’t even really know whether the basis for most of it is that the series is too beholden to romance tropes, or not enough (I kind of think it’s more the latter).  What do these people want that they’re not getting?  Is this too much of a harem series or not enough of one? To that, I still contend that it’s not a harem series at a ..read more
