Go! Go! Loser Ranger! #07 — Betrayal By Teamwork

I'm not sure I follow the lesson here. Impressions: This exam arc continues to do absolutely nothing for me, and especially not with at least three different scenes of various people explaining the true nature of the test. Yeah, law of the jungle. I get it. Meanwhile, the angelic demon that's apparently murdered everybody's families got accidentally summoned by the comic relief girl that keeps getting stuffed into lockers… literally… and is roaming the halls murdering people. One of these seems like it'd be far more interesting to follow along with, and more pressing, so here ..read more

Doomsday Train #08 — Not Safe for YouTube

Weird gore stuff like this and Kampfer is a piece of Japanese culture I just don't get. Impressions: Uhhhhhh… huh. I'm not entirely sure where to even start with this episode. Did they hand off the script to a bunch of 12 year olds along with 10 pounds of sugar and let nature take its course? And then tell them that they got bonus points if they could get the episode banned from YouTube? I started out wondering why they weren't just parodying Disney since Mickey's now in public domain, but then we had the girl wearing a giant noose as an accessory, with the bad guys literally lynching h ..read more

Doomsday Train #07 — Zombie Face

I'm not sure that I had shilling for the Sega Saturn on my bingo card. Impressions: Where in the apocalypse would you even find a Saturn these days, and why are you playing it in the middle of an empty field? Although that is kind of indicative of the major weirdness of the core joke of this episode, yelling vaguely sexual things at zombies to make them explode from the sheer over stimulation of it. Perhaps as a child of American culture, I am totally inured to it, what with the Baby Got Backs, Strokin', I Want Your Sex, WAP, and god only knows what else, but come on. Even Angel of the ..read more

Doomsday Train #06 — Return of the Living Dead

We really have run out of ideas. Impressions: Back to a very disjointed episode. The dog's sick. No, wait. Long flashback about yelling at the missing girl that she's nothing special and should give up on all her dreams. No, wait, zombies. Yes, zombies, again. As if the nihilistic mushroom zombie cult wasn't zombie enough, it's now time to do literal zombies, but not until about 16 minutes into the episode, at which point we're going to mainly cut back to the non-zombie group to explain to them that there are zombies in the area. Enthralling way to end the episode. I guess the dramatic ..read more

I hadn't been paying the closest of attention, but apparently Loser Ranger is off this week, and a quick glance at all the other shows that I recently gave up on has them all continuing to do the things that made me sick of them. And I don't want to go to the trouble of capping and sorting just for "It's still doing training arcs" or "Girl insecure, but told not to be, which makes it all better." Either of which could describe… a lot of shows. So… I've got genuinely nothing right now. BLOGGING. Really selling that this is a dying medium ..read more

Doomsday Train #05 — Wrath of Galzilla

Things would be different under the threat of godzilla peeing on everything. Impressions: The thought occured to me that I'm totally unfamiliar with any recent kaiju stuff really, so I couldn't tell at all if the whole stomping about bit was a reference to any more recent flavors of that. I'm pretty certain it's not though, and why wouldn't you go for the iconic 50s cinematography in the first place? Granted, it's probably not taken as corny in the Japanese zeitgeist, and I feel like King Kong has the more recognizable scenes, but if you're going to do that bit, why not go for the thing ..read more

Loser Ranger #04 — Handy Man

Low hanging pun fruit, I know. Impressions: It finally dipped its toes a little bit into that ultra violence needed to actually make the rangers seem somewhat psychotic. But just a little bit, because it was preceeded by them being comic relief, and their own reactions was that it was over the top and they were uncomfortable with it. So we're still a far cry off from Homelander or Omniman's level of violence and evil here, but it's a start. Though it wasn't helped by the weird melting dude that was the villain of the week either. If you want everybody to have childish minds, a ..read more

Jellyfish #04 — Idol Envy

I think my interest here has run its course. Impressions: As this too veers more and more into "yay idols," and bafflingly poor understanding of music production and internet traffic metrics despite that being its core concept, my interest wanes. The especially weird part to me was the third or so of the episode centered on the idol group she used to belong to. They're just… trucking along, being a soulless corporate idol group, but you're not really supposed to think the soulless part. The manic pixie girl's mother is their producer, which is I guess the drama of the episode? That it m ..read more

Salad Bowl #04 — Bully Lawyers

Is this really a field of law? Impressions: As poor as the first two thirds of this episode was, I think it's really the end the drove the nail in the coffin home. It's Halloween! So are we doing a Halloween bit? Some Halloween jokes? No. A quick dressup montage, and then it's time for a alternate-world history lesson about Nobunaga. Because when I think of Halloween, the thing that comes to mind is definitely Nobunaga fanfiction. But that shouldn't take away from the first half, which was another bullying thing. They defeated it by… recording the bullying, and then saying that the ..read more

Mysterious Disappearances #03 — Cow Spit

…Riiight. Impressions: I'm ready to call it quits on this one too. The awful mysteries are bad, but that's par for the course for anime. Not the awful fanservice either, because pinning down a woman to crawl and sniff all over her is definitely needed, to say nothing of the multiple clothes explosion scenes. Far too much time is spent on explaining the mechanics and the trivialities of the exact mechanics while the actual investigation and pursuit of the true culprit or source of the issues is completely skipped over. There's no actual mystery here, despite the title repeating ..read more
