The Week in Review is a collection of both all the goodness I’ve written during the past week around the internet, as well as a small pile of links I found interesting – generally endurance sports related. I’ve often wondered what to do with all of the coolness that people write, and while I share a lot of it on Twitter/X and Facebook, this is a better forum for sending it on to y’all. Most times these different streams don’t overlap, so be on the lookout at all these places for good stuff! So with that, let’s get into the action! Hiking Across Madeira: A 3-Day Trek (MIUT Variant)

Last week I embarked on a trip to hike across the Portuguese island of Madeira, which sits about 500km off the coast of Africa. It, alongside the Azores, are often referred to as the ‘Hawaii of the Atlantic’. I had a few product/post/video-related objectives for the hike, some short-term, some longer-term. One of those included testing out the new Polar Grit X2 Pro on treks that it’s ostensibly designed for, while putting it up against a slate of watches in the same category. Starting later today I’ll post my usual daily onslaught of Instagram stories covering the trip over on my Instagram th ..read more

FORM has just announced their newest smart goggles, the FORM Smart Swim 2. These heads-up display swim goggles automatically track all your swim stats as you swim while concurrently putting a screen inside the lens of the goggles for you to see everything from pacing information to structured workout details in real time. As the name implies, this is FORM’s second iteration of the goggles, following their first set that was launched back in 2019. The standout feature of the V2 goggles is an integrated heart rate sensor, which will automatically track your heart rate during your swims. Furthe ..read more

FIT File: The Real Life of a Sports Tech Reviewer

For those not subscribed to the FIT File (it’s free!) via your regular podcast app or on YouTube, here’s a quick post with the highlights from the most recent episode. In this episode, we talk about what it’s actually like to be a sports tech reviewer, from the products we review, how we make money, our review process, as well as the darker side –  like getting blacklisted by companies. We don’t quite have chapter markings yet, but I am working on them. It’s a beast of an episode, but arguably one of the most comprehensive episodes (or videos in general), that we’ve ever done. Than ..read more

HoverAir X1 Follow-Me Sports Drone: Tool, Toy, or Trash?

Over the last decade and a half, I’ve tested almost every autonomous follow-me drone made in the market. During that time period, we’ve seen many newcomers attempt to break into the market. Albeit, with less success these days, given DJI’s dominance. Of course, their dominance is for good reason: They generally make some of the best drones out there. But when it comes to follow-me type features, while DJI has had the best image quality and other drone features, they haven’t always had the best follow-me technology. That award was Skydio for years, before they got out of the consumer busines ..read more

Wahoo has announced three new connectivity related items for their BOLT V2 & ROAM V2 bike computers. As the title implies, you’ll now be able to control your GoPro, control your existing ANT+ smart lights (from any vendor), and control the music on your phone. Note that while the other pieces are here today, the GoPro integration isn’t lit up yet. Wahoo doesn’t quite yet have a timeframe for it, as it’s been delayed slightly to work out some kinks. Nonetheless, I’ll give you a quick 2-second tour. The smart light control and music control pieces are live as of today, whereas the GoPro int ..read more

Strava Expands Cycling Best Efforts, and Starts Pushing Routes to All Polar Devices

For this Thursday’s sports tech quickie, I’m going to blend two things with the word Strava into one post. One being entirely Strava-driven, the other being almost entirely Polar-driven. Together, they form one post. With that, let’s dive into it. Strava Expands Cycling Best Efforts: Strava is expanding their categories for best efforts, to now include both a distance/time parameter, as well as a best power for a given time-duration. This is in addition to the existing ‘Elevation’ and ‘Longest Ride’ options. This feature is being expanded for paid Strava Subscribers. The way it works is simpl ..read more

Polar has just announced the latest version of their flagship watch: the Polar Grit X2 Pro. While the Polar Grit X series contains the same features as the Polar Vantage V series, it’s designed in a more rugged case and premium materials. Except previously, that adventure-oriented Grit X series lacked one important backcountry feature: Offline maps. Now that box is checked, along with a slate of other features coming to the Grit X2 Pro that were introduced on the Vantage V3 last fall. The Grit X2 Pro adds those global offline maps, adds dual-frequency GPS, an improved heart rate sensor, and ..read more
