The holiday baking season is in full swing. While some holiday traditions have gone by the wayside, when we think of Christmas, cookies and tea still reign supreme. But have you ever thought about tea in your cookies or other holiday dishes? Tea is a great way to put a new twist on some old favorites. Infusing your recipes with tea is easier than you may have imagined, but ditch the tea bags and use loose leaf tea. Not only is the quality better, so are the flavors that it imparts to your favorite recipes.  Although you can add tea leaves directly to your recipes, you can substi ..read more

High Tea, Afternoon Tea, What's the Difference?
Silver Tips Tea - Silver Tips Tea Blog

High tea is NOT the dainty meal of petit fours, finger sandwiches and scones served with clotted cream.  That is actually Afternoon Tea. Served generally at 4 or 5 pm in the afternoon, during the Victorian and Edwardian times, it became a welcome break between lunch and the late supper of those times. Afternoon tea was often served at a low table in a parlor or drawing room and thus called ‘low’ tea or ‘afternoon tea’. In contrast, High Tea is what workers came home to after a hard day's work, especially in northern England, and was served in the early evening.  It was always accom ..read more

We often get emails from Tea Room customers asking about teas and if our shop is still open and where they can get our sandwich recipes and if we have a website. Here is one we got in our inbox a few days ago.  We were happy to direct her to Homestyle Desserts in Peekskill. "Hi! I was born in Tarrytown and growing up, my Grandma took me to Silver Tips Tearoom all the time. It is one of my fondest memories. One of my grandma's favorite parts of a lunch at the tearoom was a layered lemon cake for dessert. Her 85th birthday is coming up and I would love to be able to get her that same cake ..read more

All Tea is Not Created Equal - Loose Leaf vs. Teabags

A cup of tea from a teabag is just not as good as Whole Leaf tea steeped in its pure loose leaf form.   There are only two advantages to teabags – Speed & Convenience.  It’s easy as 1-2-3 and takes no time at all.  But for a great cup of tea with character and complexity and all the nuances of taste – malty, floral, astringent, smoky, nutty, earthy, rich, woodsy, pungent, fragrant – you need Whole Leaf.  No one argues about the quality of Coffee anymore.  Think about Tea the way you do Coffee.  There’s Instant, then there’s the supermarket brand and final ..read more

Is Silver Tea Green Tea?

This is what customers are searching for on our site as well as on Google. Excellent question! First, the color of the dry leaf is not always a good indication of what type of tea it is. Second, silver-hued tea could be Green or it could be White. And finally, some green teas even have 'white' in their names. Take our White Blossom Green below: This tea is a Green tea and sometimes called White Monkey. No wonder customers are asking - is Silver tea a Green tea? Sure looks like it, doesn't it? But it isn't. This is a classic Green tea, manufactured with a preponderance of buds in the leaf ..read more

World Poetry Day is celebrated every year on March 21st.  It's a day to read, to think, and to write. Poetry is a form of expression that people from all cultures can identify with and it brings us together with the poser to create dialogue. Poems, in their many forms, vary as much as Teas do, and like so many teas, they have the power to whisk you off to far-away exotic lands, take you on grand adventures, a romantic get-away, or even gently pull you into meditative thoughts. This World Poetry Day, we asked you to share those words with us, for a chance to win one of three prizes. The en ..read more
