What situation is etched into your mind?

For me the incident was actually as a CNA while working to become an LPN/RN. I was working a hospice unit while in college, working the 3-11 shift. 3 weeks in I see a 30 something year old female with multiple bowel obstructions from adhesions vomiting stool and sadly wimpering and asking for help. Between her legit asking for lord for her to stop projectile vomiting feces to the smell that locked the whole unit down, I at 18 I thought I was living through a horror film. No my emetophobia did not help. She was surrounded by several techs and nurses, but her guttural voice pleading made my hea ..read more

I am male nurse (46) and have worked in the ICU for 3 years. I worked with a good group that worked well together and had no issues jumping and helping each other. I am the only male on night shift. We all would joke and pick on each other as a coping mechanism but it was never personal. Nurses on my unit at baseline were inappropriate but not hurtful to one another. Then a new nurse joins the team. Immediately we realize her dynamic doesn’t really align with the rest of us. She joins in our back and forth but instead of being silly or playful she decides to start attacking me personally. Mak ..read more

Anyone work for Planned Parenthood?

Hi everyone. I'm interested in leaving the bedside and looking for an RN position at Planned Parenthood. My background is in Med/Surg and Heme/Onc. Reproductive/Women's health is something I'm much more passionate about, but I'm curious as to what people's experiences are working for PP specifically as opposed to another OBGYN clinic. What exactly are your responsibilities? How are the hours? Do you like it? submitted by /u/1life1decision [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

3 years bedside, and I hate my job. What did you switch to and how are you liking it?

ICU here. I love the job itself and how much we get to see and learn, but my god I am so miserable. I’m exhausted, work life balance blows, doctors are assholes and hospital politics are so exhausting. Our staff is quitting in droves, management won’t let us use our PTO and take time off because they “need to meet the needs of the unit” (you guys hire travelers by the boat load then float them to the rest of the understaffed hospital daily, while guaranteeing their days off, but I’m the one responsible for meeting the needs of your unit??) Travel isn’t an option for me right now, and I am the ..read more

I’m a tech while I’m in school and have been working as a mental health tech for a month. I worked physical rehab for two years and loved my job but had to resign after a back injury followed by a year of PT. i loved that job and never had a bad interaction with a coworker in those two years. i’ve worked at this place a little over a month and have already cried four times because of how the nurses treat me. i’m not one to get upset at work, but they treated me like i was the scum of the earth. i would not know how to do something because no one ever taught me, and they’d ask if i was stupid ..read more

I can handle a lot of things but vomit is NOT one of them.

I have been an OR nurse at a level one trauma center for almost two years. I can handle a lot of things. Decaying limbs? Sure. Lots of blood? No problem. Some of the gnarliest trauma injuries? I can handle that. I could even get lunch right after a case. What I cant handle is vomit. I cant stand the sound of someone throwing up, the sight of it or even the smell of it. Instant nausea. Its truly a rare occasion in the OR since patients are NPO (with exceptions of emergency and trauma patients). We had an emergency vascular case come in and the overnight staff was a little late so a couple othe ..read more

Exposure to 2nd hand smoke at work

I work in a nursing home where several of the residents are allowed to go outside to the designated smoking area at certain times. I sometimes get stuck being the one that’s supposed to supervise them. It’s only 15 min of my shift but 2nd hand smoke gives me an instant headache. It seeps into my clothes and I can smell it on me the rest of my shift. It grosses me out, makes me feel ill, and I’m beginning to resent the people for their smoking. I know it’s not their fault, but this is affecting me. What can I do besides quit? submitted by /u/4theloveofbbw [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
