Worst “design flaw” of your unit or hospital?

Saw this question on the residency subreddit and figured I’d ask it here! At my current ICU, there’s only one central monitor at the nurse’s station. There are no cubbies or work stations to sit outside your patient’s room, so everyone sits at the nurse’s station. I like being able to watch my patient more closely. And even sit away from the nurse‘s station, idk Visitors can stroll into the unit whenever. It’s not badge operated. I liked how at my previous hospital, visitors had to enter through a family waiting room and sign their name at the front desk. Especially if it’s a new admit and we ..read more

I had a patient come in to the ED. 7 years old, respiratory collapse from allergic reaction. I'm primary nurse. The local Children's Hospital has its ambulance on the way. I oxygenate, I get 2 IV access when two techs miss. I medicate. Get him "stable". Here's the ambulance. Turn over, off they go. 35 minutes..... door to discharge. DAMN I'M GOOD! Sorry, just had to get that out submitted by /u/DocMcCall [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Sign-on bonus

So. I switched nursing jobs a bit ago (my old unit was dramatically understaffed) and I actually like the new job a bit better. We’re better staffed to the acuity, doctors are fine, coworkers are fine, no real issues. Except one. When I applied, the listing said in nice big bold letters “10K SIGN-ON BONUS”. It’s paid out in 3 month-ish installments, and I haven’t received any yet. So I spoke with some people and it’s seeming more and more like they’re going to try to avoid giving me the sign-on bonus. As it turns out I don’t have any screenshots of the original job posting, and the bonus wasn ..read more

Anybody else do this? You’re tummy’s grumbling, behind on charting, and there’s that one pt who’s incontinent, A&Ox1, kinda stinky and probably won’t mind the extra smells… submitted by /u/spicygarcon [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I've got such a bee in my bonnet about this one because it's the highlight of my day. I'm constantly on high alert for the sound of a pyxis being restocked so I can drop whatever I'm doing and wander into the med room. Me: oh you're restocking, I'll come back later. PT:okay thanks Me: oh hey did you get that email about why we're supposed to be extra careful with Metronidazole now? PT: what? No Me: yeah apparently it's really Flagyl About 1/4 laugh but it makes me happy every time. submitted by /u/MartianCleric [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

There’re so many patients that are terrified at the thought of injections. Do you have any tips to make the process less painful for patients? Like pushing the plunger slowly etc. Thanks! submitted by /u/tinyicecubes [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Getting fired for falling asleep while working night shift

I am a rotating Day and night RN. I recently moved into a place that’s very difficult for me to sleep and I’ve dozed off on nightshirt. A coworker took a picture of me and submitted it to HR. I am now being told that I am not fit for duty and being fired. What do I do? Thoughts on this? Has anyone else experienced this? I have told my direct manager multiple times that I’m struggling and not able to sleep for days at times. submitted by /u/Impressive_Green_307 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I am a new grad nurse with a considerable amount of student loans. As a result, right after getting my license, I didn’t waste any time and applied immediately to a med surge unit. I was hired quickly for a night shift position. I was very excited to learn the ropes, the routine, policy, and procedures, but that ended soon on my second day when I realized that the one training me only had four months of training and was also struggling with their workload. She also didn’t know that she had to train me. Now, every time I go to work, I feel like I am just pretending like I am a nurse, and I’m s ..read more
