Decaf Typica wins 2024 US Brewers Cup: Specialty coffee is changing its opinion
Perfect Daily Grind
by Tasmin Grant

Generally speaking, people seem to have particularly strong opinions about decaf coffee. But whether you love it or hate it, decaf coffee clearly serves an important purpose in the industry and isn’t going away anytime soon. It may come as a surprise to most, however, that at the 2024 US Brewers Cup finals held in Rancho Cucamonga, California on 17 March, Weihong Zhang placed first using a decaffeinated Typica from Finca Los Nogales in Colombia. With flavour notes of eucalyptus, strawberry, and raspberry, Weihong described the coffee as “the best decaf coffee we have ever tasted”. Considering ..read more

Specialty coffee needs to remain “exciting” for younger generations
Perfect Daily Grind
by Vasileia Fanarioti

Now more than ever, there is an abundance of products catering to younger generations. From functional beverages and flavoured waters to smoothies and teas, younger consumers have endless options available to them.  This can certainly make it challenging for specialty coffee brands to capture the interest of younger generations. In order to do so, roasters and coffee companies need to come up with innovative ways to keep specialty coffee new, fresh, and intriguing. To learn more, I spoke to Genevieve Kappler, Director of Coffee at Roasting Plant, Savina Giachgia, Coffee Expert at Nestlé P ..read more

Printing producers’ names on coffee packaging: How much value does it add?
Perfect Daily Grind
by Thomas Wensma
3d ago
Coffee packaging is a hugely important aspect of any roaster’s marketing and branding strategies. Whether they are selling their products in coffee shops or supermarkets (or even both), a roaster’s packaging needs to stand out and make a statement. Along with colour schemes, fonts, and logos, the information printed on coffee bags is a key part of this. In specialty coffee in particular, certain information – including origin, variety, processing method, and more – is expected to be included on packaging. It has also become increasingly common to see producers’ names printed on coffee bags, an ..read more

The role of the barista is changing in specialty coffee
Perfect Daily Grind
by Leah Bowman

The barista is one of the most important supply chain actors in the coffee industry. Often considered the “face” of coffee shops, baristas help to balance the art and science of making coffee. Their job is to not only consistently serve high-quality drinks, but to also provide excellent customer service and hospitality to every person who walks through the door. As specialty coffee has evolved in recent years, so too has the role of the barista. Now more than ever, serving great coffee and welcoming customers is seen by many as the bare minimum. Baristas also need to disseminate accessible inf ..read more

EU set to delay deforestation regulations: What can the coffee industry expect?
Perfect Daily Grind
by Tasmin Grant
1w ago
The agricultural sector – including coffee production – is one of the biggest drivers of deforestation across the world. Experts believe large-scale agriculture accounts for up to 75% of global deforestation, making it one of the leading exacerbators of climate change. In December 2022, as a direct response to this issue, the European Union (EU) announced a new provisional deal which would seek to minimise and eradicate the import of products linked to deforestation – including coffee. Effectively, the European Union Regulation on Deforestation-free products (EUDR) means unless traders can cer ..read more

How climate risk management and insurance can help coffee producers
Perfect Daily Grind
by Melina Devoney

The coffee industry is well aware of the impact of climate change on production across the Bean Belt. Over the past few decades, we have seen that climate change has increased global average temperatures and altered rain patterns around the world – which naturally has a huge impact on production and the people who work in the sector. Many producers are already doing all they can within their means to reduce the environmental impact of their farms. But considering how climate change poses significant threats to the sustainable future of the coffee industry, adaptation and mitigation measures ne ..read more

Blends: “Intellectual property” for coffee roasters?
Perfect Daily Grind
by Bhavi Patel
1w ago
Blends have certainly made a comeback in specialty coffee in recent years. Whether it’s on the competition stage or in premium coffee shops, high-quality blends are popping up more and more. As the industry has largely shifted its perception of blends away from being a more “traditional” option to providing a novel and exciting sensory experience, a growing number of specialty coffee roasters are adding them to their menus. And this presents a unique opportunity for them to market themselves – and drive brand identity in more effective ways. As part of this, there is a case to argue that roast ..read more

Wholesale coffee roasters: What happens when your clients outgrow you?
Perfect Daily Grind
by Matthew Hill
1w ago
For larger-sized roasters looking to scale operations, it can be a natural progression to take on wholesale clients. By selling their coffee products to cafés and other retailers, roasters can diversify revenue streams and strengthen their brand identities. There may come a time, however, when wholesale clients may decide to expand their businesses – and potentially outgrow their suppliers. The prospect of losing a key account can be a daunting one, so how can roasters handle these situations? To find out, I spoke to Anne Cooper, a consultant at Equilibrium Master Roasters, and Chris Gaag, Dir ..read more
