At the heart of beach renourishment lies the understanding of beach erosion—an ongoing process shaped by a myriad of natural and human-induced factors. Coastal areas like Edisto are subject to the relentless forces of waves, currents, tides, and storms, which gradually wear away the sandy shoreline over time. This erosion can be exacerbated by sea level rise, intensified storm activity, and anthropogenic activities such as coastal development and navigation dredging. Left unchecked, erosion poses a threat not only to the aesthetic appeal of the beach but also to infrastructure, habitats, and ..read more

Each time a new season rolls around, I can’t help but think that season is my new favorite. My favorite part of spring can be summed up in two words: Boat rides.
There are no words to describe the pleasure of getting out on the water for the first boat ride of the season. As soon as she’s taken out of storage, my dad gets her cleaned up and ready for her first voyage of the year. That means the cooler gets filled, the “fish or cut bait” flag goes up, and various bottles of sunscreen are thrown onboard.
Generally, we put the boat in down at the marina, and if you’ve ever attempted that mi ..read more

Curious about the dining habits of marine life? You might be surprised to see what some of those critters eat.

Spring Break season is upon us and that means it’s time to kick back and relax on the beach. However, to make sure everyone has an awesome time and things don’t turn out like a Cancun trip full of girls gone wild, here are some helpful tips on how to party responsibly at the beach.
Keep it Clean
Edistonian’s tout this magical place as a family beach, but that doesn’t mean one has to avoid getting a little wild. If you enjoy an adult beverage or two (or 10), remember to clean up after yourself. Year after year litter gets left behind on the beach and this not only impacts other visitors, it can ..read more

One trip to Edisto Beach is all it takes to become hooked.
Families, friends, couples, and everyone else come down to this time-forgotten coastal town for a couple of weeks every year and it make it their home away from home.
Many of these people have been to Edisto more times than they can count. They make the long drive down Highway 174 as it winds its way through the dense forest and marshland knowing that when it curls into Palmetto Boulevard their vacation has begun.
While the ocean is what draws so many of Edisto’s visitors to her beach, it’s also the reason the vast majority of the rent ..read more

Our family began having its family reunion when we were still living in Ohio, and the first year we came from several different states to celebrate our connection. But the most wonderful part of the reunion was that the patriarch, Felix L. McHaney, my dad, was there to celebrate with us. For the first several years he was an inspiration to us. At his advanced age he still flew alone from Memphis, Tennessee, to Atlanta where either my sister in Augusta or I in Aiken picked him up and escorted him to the beach. Most years we had three big houses because there were so many of us.around 30. Believ ..read more
