Overdressed?!

It would appear I overdress.  I realised this when I tried to dress up a bit for a night out- a night in a local wine bar.  You would think this should be easy, but given my every day get up is fairly dressy it is definitely not easy. You'd think I had always known I overdress, but apparently I don't realise this.  Like the time I accidentally dressed as an extra from Game of Thrones to my friends Open House Art exhibtion (it looked like I was about to start a fire ritual) or when I regularly wear large skirts and high heels to play in the park with my kids, and give everyone a ..read more

Is it Spring yet?!

I can't be the only one in this country to be wishing it was spring yet? I cannot possibly be the only one who feels like January has lasted an eternity!  So with the excitement of wearing my newly repaired vintage dress (thanks sis), a glance at my calendar (nearly February), the sight of a little sunshine and the temperature just tipping into the teens I got a touch excited yesterday morning. And still excited with the new found freedom of my car (side note- I passed my test and bought a car- just a little modern Renault oh how it should have been a vintage MG!) I headed out for drive a ..read more

It's the Autumn Equinox today, and the glorious (sometimes!) summer gives way to the crisp autumnal weather.  We love trudging through the fallen leaves and conkers in knee high booots and tweed fabrics. The problem is we ALWAYS struggle to manage our wardrobe at this time of year and find an inbetween- and yes we know the same things happens every year, we really should have cracked it by now....we think we have some handy inbeween helpers though, so you don't need to pack those cotton dresses away just yet! Your transitional seasonal wardrobe essentials! Tights and leggings: t ..read more

Hiatus and the Journey!

It's been a bit quiet here over at Lesley's Girls...yes we know over the years we have said that a few times...but never have we been this quiet.  The Vintage Vixen in charge, Janine, explains what has been happening and what may be in the pipeline next.... Having thought long and hard on and off over the last two years, over whether a personal blog post was the way to go explaining the change in my life and how it has inevitably impacted my business, I decided that its high time I did- and after a little chat with Hatty from Whats Your Tale Nightingale following a small (ish ..read more

Why were the 1970s so.... well SEVENTIES!?

The 1970s seems to have a reputation of the era that fashion forgot... or forsook depending on your outlook. (NB- this is also the blog post that time forgot having been started some 18 months ago). Most people think of mid-century looks when they think of vintage, but the 1970s is a whole generation of fashion that shouldn't be forgotten.  Don't get me wrong the 1970s did have it's fashion shockers (well to me anyway!) but then every generation has some things which aren't as liked- even the ever popular 1950s. I personally am as big a fan of the 1970s as I am of the mid-century styles ..read more

It's been a busy week for a Serial Petticoat Wearer...we celebrated the other half of Lesley's Girls, Susannah's special birthday.  We can't say how old she is (she will probably strangle me with a vintage scarf if I do) but it was a special number!! We celebrated by reliving our youth and headed to Rollerworld.  For those not local- Rollerworld is sort of a slippery hell where you voluntarily enter on your own two flat feet, and then PAY to have wheels attached to them and risk serious injury and/or death by hurling yourself round a super slippery floor repeatedly- swerving childre ..read more

In praise of things

Things are so important.  Sometimes you feel you have no right to be so attached to them, that it is shallow or superficial, and that it says something about your personality you would rather not portray.  However, I'm going to buck the trend and say "things" are important. A relatively minor event sparked this chain of thinking. As a mum of two one of the most dreaded fears I have is of loosing one of their "special toys".  You know what I mean - the dirty, ragged, lanky, manky teddy bear that has spent the last few years surgically glued to their head- especially at night tim ..read more

Why I Love a Vintage Bike

I have a soft spot for vintage bikes.  As a lover of all things of the old and as a fairly environmentally minded person a vintage bike makes me smile (plus I have yet to pass my driving test so bikes are a necessity to me still!) There is something I love though particularly about the Dutch Sit Up and Beg style of bicycle, in my head I will be gracefully sweeping along the road towards the shops with skirts flying and with images of bunches of flowers and baguettes in my basket...usually however, I am rushing with a laptop on my back towards the school to pick up my children, it may ..read more
