It has always been our mission at Cleveland Inner City Ballet to make dance education available to as many diverse communities who have been cut off from the arts as possible. We have been very fortunate to offer our services throughout the Greater Cleveland Area. During the 2021 Pandemic lockdown our virtual programs exceeded our expectations. Our virtual programs quickly attracted dancers who (by the pandemic) were in situations of being isolated from the arts. CICB saw our virtual roster grow as we began teaching dancers in other states here in the US and then Internationally. Our social me ..read more

Did you know that CICB has a Diversity and Inclusion Training Program for ALL teachers, staff and volunteers? Diversity and Inclusion in Ballet can be a bit challenging because at its root Ballet is not always diverse or even inclusive. When the riots of 2020 in our nation began, just about every ballet studio owner I know personally reached out asking "What can we do to help, what can we do to be more inclusive?" My response to this was to start at home with my own organization. This is when we created the CICB Diversity and Inclusion Training Program. All teachers, staff, and volunteers are ..read more

Modeling the Diversity We Wish to See

Modeling the diversity we wish to see is just as important as seeking it outright. I always tell my parents when you attend any ballet school (mine included) don't just watch the children in class but look for a few key components that need to be present before making any solid enrollment decisions. 1) How diverse is the staff 2). how diverse are the students 3). How are you treated in the waiting room and 4). Do people put up with you or are they genuinely welcoming and excited to see you and your little one attend classes. Having programming which models diverse people in leadership position ..read more

The Importance of Educational Aides in the Ballet Classroom.
Cleveland Inner City Ballet
by Chanda Ford-White

When I began my ballet training many years ago there were no visually stimulating aspects of my ballet experiences. Big empty studios that echoed like tunnels, cold metal ballet barres, and dark stained Marley floors. To a professional dancer these things are a dream to have but, to children just starting out in ballet, it can be off-putting and intimidating at best. This is the main reason we at CICB strive to make sure our dancers are in spaces that are full of light, color, and MANY stimulating Educational Aides during class. In many of our CICB classes we use props like ribbons, flowers, f ..read more
