Standard YouTube Licence Scottish Ballet The Nutcracker Theatre Royal Newcastle, 6 Feb 2025 19:30 I was so delighted with the first act of Christopher Hampson's production of The Nutcracker that I tweeted in the interval that the company that had brought me my favourite Swan Lake had also created my favourite Nutcracker.  Immediately after I had clicked the "post" button I reflected on my rashness as I had only seen half of the ballet.  I need not have worried because the second act was every bit as good as the first.  Scottish Ballet already had a fine versio ..read more

Standard YouTube Licence Acosta Danza Nutcracker in Havana The Lowry, 27 Jan 2025, 19:30 Carlos Acosta's Nutcracker in Havana had been promoted as a reimagining of Ivanov's ballet.  That filled me with trepidation as I negotiated Manchester's rush hour traffic because reworking a well-known and well-loved ballet is not easy to do.  David Dawson pulled it off with his Swan Lake for Scottish Ballet as did Ted Brandsen with his Coppelia but I regret that I can't say the same for David Nixon's Swan Lake or the Coppelia of Morgann ..read more

Standard YouTube Licence Finnish National Ballet A Christmas Carol YouTube Arte Concert 23 Dec 2024 In this country, we hear much about the Royal Danish Ballet and the Royal Swedish Ballet, but not much about their neighbours across the Gulf of Bothnia.  One of the artists I saw on my recent visit to Tallinn was Francesca Loi who danced Cinders's stepmother in Cristiano Principato's Cinderella.  I looked her up and found that she was with the Finnish National Ballet.  I explored her company's website and discovered it was founded just over 100 years ago.  It perfor ..read more

John Leech Marley's Ghost Source Wikimedia Commons  Northern Ballet  A Christmas Carol Leeds Grand Theatre, 31 Dec 2024 Although I read in Dance and Dancers about a performance at the Royal Northern College of Music by a new company called Northern Dance Theatre when I was an undergraduate at St. Andrews, it was only in 1987 that I saw them for the first time.  I could not have had a better introduction because it was Gillian Lynne's A Simple Man with Christopher Gable as L S Lowry and Moira Shearer as the artist's mother. They were two ballet heroes from my chil ..read more

Ernst Meisner Standard YouTube Licence The appointment of Ernst Meisner as the next Artistic Director of the Dutch National Ballet is excellent news and nowhere will it be welcomed more than in this country.  He trained at the Royal Ballet School and spent the first 10 years of his career with the Royal Ballet.  While he was here he staged a gala at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford at which he invited Leanne Benjamin, Alina Cojocaru, Zenaida Yanowsk, Ed Watson, Filip Barankiewicz and four dancers from Russia to perform (see Mara Galeazzi Ernst Meisner: My ..read more

Standard YouTube Licence Dutch National Ballet Giselle UK screening 21 Jan 2024  14:00 We do not get to see enough of the Dutch National Ballet in this country which is a shame for many reasons. It is one of the world's great companies and it is the company outside the Anglosphere that is most similar to the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet.  There are many links between the National Ballet and the two Royal Ballet companies  For example, Northern Ballet's new Director, Federico Bonelli, danced with the National Ballet between 1996 and 2003 and the Junior Com ..read more

Copyright 2023 English National Ballet, Licence Standard YouTuve Licence Readers of this blog will know that I have a particularly high regard for Sarah Kundi.  Although I must have seen her several times when she was with Northern Ballet she first came to my notice through the YouTube video of Depouillage in which she danced with Jade Hale-Christofi.  It was that film that led me to Ballet Black (see Ballet Black's Appeal 12 March 2013).  When I saw her dance for the first time in  "Dopamine (you make my levels go silly)" and War Letters at the Bernie Gran ..read more
