Gear Review: Alaskan Hunter 2.0 Knife from Niche Custom Blade Works

My eyes have seen and hands have held many hunting knives over the years. I love a good knife! Back in 2022, I started doing some research on getting a custom knife made. I was very particular about the overall design, but I had so many ideas. My Instagram feed kept blowing up with knives from Rob McKibbon at Niche Custom Blade Works and I listened to a podcast episode he recorded with Soul Seekers. My decision was made. I was going to have Rob make me a knife. We sent messages back and forth and I decided on an Alaskan Hunter 2.0 with custom scales. My creativity took over and I started sendi ..read more

What Are Your Motives?
The SoCal Bowhunter

“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” ‭‭James‬ ‭4‬:‭1‬-‭3‬‬ The post What Are Your Motives? appeared first on The Faithful Sportsman ..read more

Exploring Culinary Talent and Creativity through Hunting

Creating new things to eat makes me happy. Not simply because I like to eat, but because I like the process. The other day, I decided I wanted to explore a crockpot dish in a new, healthier way. With deer meat and veggies in the freezer, I wanted to make a shepherd’s pie, but without all the carbs. Off to work I went! First off, I wanted to make a very healthy, low-sodium meal I could eat for my lunches during the week. Normally I like variety, but with venison, I like eating it more often than microwave meals. I like shepherd’s pie, but I decided healthy was the way to go, so here’s my recipe ..read more

Simple Carpentry to Build a Sawhorse
The SoCal Bowhunter

Repurposing and building new things from said repurposed items makes me happy. It also keep my ever grinding mind busy and working, in order to keep me out of trouble. In my garage, I had a rather large shipping pallet that needed to either be; 1.) taken to the dump, or 2.) dismantled and discarded in the trash, or 3.) repurposed. Opting for #3, I decided to dismantle the pallet and make a much needed sawhorse for my Last Chance Archery EZ-Green Bow Press. Making the sawhorse was actually very simple, thanks to Kevin at Living Traditions Homestead. I watched his YouTube video and used his ide ..read more

January has flown by and priorities have shifted multiple times. It occurred to me this week that I have not shared anything from the Archery Trade Association show! So many great things happened and I was able to talk to many manufacturers about new products launching this year. Most of what I will share will be in images of the products and a brief description. I may know more than I share, but that is due to being asked not to go into too much detail right now. That being said, this will be a post loaded with photos. The entrance to the Show from our hotel room. Phil and Jake Kepple of 4 Ar ..read more

The Deer are Making Fun of Me!
The SoCal Bowhunter

My Spypoint cameras are still up and working well, despite this intense cold we have in Nashville. It almost feels like the deer know they are working, too! Here are a couple photos from yesterday that made me smile. Little miss nanny here decided the perfect place to relieve herself was right in front of my camera. I guess I know how she feels about the camera placement! This buck has been on camera during the archery season, early season and after the regular season is now over. To tell the truth, I’m not mad. In fact, I am happy to see he made it through as next year he should be a bigger ..read more

The Faithful Sportsman will have some apparel and hats for sale after ATA and SHOT Show. Which colors are your favorites? If I don’t have a color you would like, please let me know. Now, I am thinking about having some shirts with a catchy phrase or Bible verse on the back. I may offer up a catchphrase contest, too. Get to thinking, send me some ideas and in a few weeks I’ll review them. If I choose yours, I’ll send a shirt with your catchphrase or one-liner on the back. Sound good? When the hats are ready, I’ll be sure to share what they look like. They will be Richardson style hats with a f ..read more

Starting the New Year Off with some Doe!
The SoCal Bowhunter

In 2023, I hunted hard for mature bucks in New York and Tennessee. I came close in Tennessee, but close doesn’t fill the freezer now, does it? In NY, I opted to only hunt for a mature buck, despite having access to doe tags. God has a sense of humor as I had doe and young bucks standing right at the base of my tree on multiple occasions. It’s been a challenging season and I didn’t fill a tag in 2023. Hunting whitetail is a passion and I probably drive my wife nutty with how often I mention it. You know it’s bad when even I know I talk about it a lot. That being said, she encouraged me to get o ..read more
