Circling Jericho

Guest post by Kelley Rose Waller. Originally published on kelleyrosewaller.com Today is my son’s 999th day in foster care. You might think I’m kidding, but I have an online calendar running. 1,000 days tomorrow since we became his “resource parents,” as the state says. My children’s morning devotion today was the story of Joshua. I’m sitting at my kitchen table, stressing about testifying in court…. all the while, reading and I’m telling my kids about how the Israelites were in the same situation!  (Ok, not exactly the same, but keep reading.) They were facing a problem (Jericho) with an obvio ..read more

Three Lessons I Learned After Adopting

Adoption has many lessons for me to learn, and it’s a never-ending process. But in a recent article I wrote for Her View From Home, I share my top three with you. Last night E and I were cuddling on the couch watching the “Jungle Book” movie. I couldn’t stop kissing her sweet forehead, or touching the curve of her face. In moments like that, I am once again amazed that I get to be her mom. She was explaining her favorite ways to pop her knuckles (I’m afraid she picked that up trying to copy me). Honestly, it had been a while since I had been able to just sit and cherish her. Usually in the bus ..read more

How to talk to Adopted Children about Ephesians 1:5

Bible authors use earthly examples to explain eternal truths, but doing the opposite is dangerous. One such example is comparing our spiritual adoption through Christ with the earthly adoption of our children. “He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.” (Ephesians 1:5, English Standard Version) As adoptive parents, how many times have we seen our child’s eyes light up when someone reads a passage from Romans and the word adoption is spoken? They hear the word they know well and make the connection. However, it’s not an entirel ..read more

The Ministry of Open Adoption

If you read my adoption blog, you know I believe adoption is a form of ministry. But while many Christians jump to the conclusion that the adoptee needs ministering, I have learned it’s also for the birthmother. And the adoptive mother. Basically, the entire triad needs God’s wisdom and love! I’ve been pleased to be writing for a women’s site called She Leads Daily. They began as a Christian tool for empowering women in all stages of life, be it motherhood, singleness or marriage, working or not. This year they decided to shift into tackling big issues, real-life issues, for the modern Christi ..read more

Three Steps to Diversifying Friendships

If you found your friendships are lacking in diversity, I’ve got three basic steps to add fullness to your circle of friends. As it says in Proverbs, “Better is a neighbor (friend) who is near than a brother who is far away.” Proverbs 27:10b (ESV). Friendship makes life richer, and it’s one of my favorite things about human existence. My friendships are a priority, especially as an Army wife whose friends are more like family. One of the benefits of friendship is you get to choose your friends, and you can pick HOW you make them, too! When I realized my friendships were looking monotonous, I w ..read more

Tearing Down our Friendship Fortresses

If you need more diversity in your friendships, start by looking at why you don’t already. “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:46-47 ESV) Fellowship is as much a part of the Christian life as worship and prayer. God knew how much his creation needed companionship, and I’m so grateful He met this need for me. Friendship has always been important to me, especially ..read more

I’m sharing this funny list of my top 10 summer survival tools that helped me get stuff done, have fun, and keep the chaos to a minimum! This summer had a unique challenge this year: I was working for the first time! I hired a local teen to watch the kids a few hours each week so I could get some writing in, but for the most part it was me and the kids. Our summer has been a wonderful mix of relaxation and productivity, thanks to these 10 awesome tools! 10. Dollar store – I keep the toxic-junk from China to a minimum, but this summer I used it as a tool. I bought water guns, hula hoops and poo ..read more

When adoption failure goes beyond loss

PART TWO This is the continuation of my post on our failed adoption attempt. Continue reading to find out my biggest regret. Where We Went Wrong Things went fast for awhile, but when they slowed down, I lost heart. I began begging God to slam the door if this wasn’t what He wanted for us. But it never happened. We had a time limit because the Army was moving us, and the parental rights of the birth parents were extended time and time again. The bickering over this baby finally came to a head one sunny afternoon when we got to meet her, and ended up outside the DSS office fighting with the “ot ..read more

When adoption failure goes beyond loss

Part One Our first adoption attempt failed miserably, and I want to share it publicly for the first time. The worst part wasn’t that we didn’t get a baby. It was the pain we may have left in our wake. When my firstborn was a year old, we decided it was time to pursue adoption to complete our family. We knew it could take time, and I was anything but patient. What We Wanted I was craving another baby as much as I had the first one. Friends who journeyed through their first pregnancies with me were already pregnant again. Even adopting friends had been able to adopt. And the more independent our ..read more
