I have worked at the same school for 5 years e and I notice the following pattern with disruptive aggressive students Admin always act like it’s the first time they are hearing about this . It is said in a tone like “wow he did behave like this with his past teacher . What have you done to upset this student r. It’s the constant mild gaslighting . Do they think we don’t talk to each other. Is this normal admin behavior ? The game is getting exhausting. submitted by /u/Difficult_Article439 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

My beef with SEL

Anyone else not need an expensive panorama questionnaire to know how our students are doing emotionally? I was given 10 minutes in a team meeting yesterday to crosswalk the panorama data and report out on my incredible findings. 10 minutes for the “really important” data that must inform my teaching practice. How did we ever educate children without these costly “bandaids” that admin and school boards is going to fix decades of systemic failure. But yeah that 10 mins was life changing… submitted by /u/Changoswife717 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Even if it’s just my kid. I just realized it was May 4, so I looked at my 3rd grader and said, “Hey, it’s …May the 4th” and she quickly replied “be with you.” The she looked up all wide eyed and took and beat and said…”Hey, that’s why we’re going to the movie today! May the force be with you and May the 4th sounds like that so (she didn’t know Star Wars day had a name) it’s like that!” ???? Yes my youngling, let the force flow through you. submitted by /u/Infinite-Strain1130 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

My district is using this term as a new way to frame students who don't do any work outside of school. It is also looking to change scheduling, feeding, etc, to reflect this lens. Thoughts? submitted by /u/Relative_Elk3666 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Balancing student needs is hard

I have a high needs student (well, I have several, actually, but this one is on another level). Their mom was arrested for wandering drunk while she was pregnant with this kid. I’m fairly certain there are some undiagnosed learning disabilities (but that’s a whole other rant) and the kid is behind at least half a grade level in math and probably one to one and a half grade levels in reading. This student has always had a degree of learned helplessness. They still haven’t learned to tie their shoes; they have asked me to pack their backpack all year (I always decline; they still ask daily); th ..read more

Posted this over at r/LegalAdvice. Copying here. I’m a teacher in a red state with no union. A student with a troubled background, who is frequently tardy to class, skips classes, and who has a history of violence tried to attack me today. Everything written out seems minor but I’m extremely worried about my job, license, and assault charges. I need any advice you can give me. The female student, 12 years old, just had a hearing for placement at our alternative school for the following: Student participated in the recording, instigation, harassment and jumping of another student in the girls ..read more

When did parents get so much power in schools?

All I see and hear is how afraid admin is to stand against parents when their child constantly disrupting class. Or even worse when they’re failing. It seems like all it takes is one phone call from home and the student gets a golden pass. How did this happen? Why do parents have more control over disciplining students than teachers do? What do you do when admin won’t ever side with the teacher? submitted by /u/RevolutionaryBrief30 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Sometimes You Just Have to Sing Along

I am pretty sure this morning will be one of my top ten moments of all my teaching career. Prior to Morning Meeting, several of my 4th graders began singing "I Want it That Way" by The Backstreet Boys. They had the lyrics wrong, and as the 90s teacher that lived through this era, it was my absolute duty to teach them this song. A quick double check of the lyrics, and up it went on the SMART board for a first thing in the morning sing-along with me. My co-teacher and the 3rd graders stared in awe and wonder at the scene. Some of the 3rd graders who knew the song joined in. Several students in ..read more

We're officially in the home stretch of the school year (whoo!). But boy are the number of ridiculous arguments I'm having with kids increasing. What argument have you gotten into with a kid recently that was small and totally avoidable but was escalated by the kid? Last week, one of my students had like 15 jackets, shoes, etc. jammed into his locker. I gave him a bag and told him to clean it out during homeroom. He said no (???). It eventually devolved into me calling home. I sat at my desk during planning for a good 5 minutes because just couldn't believe how avoidable that was for the kid ..read more
