Ruddigore— is this a respected and well-liked play in the theater community?

I just saw a community theater production of Ruddigore…. And goddamn that shit was terrible. I’m not really too much of a theater person, but I know bad storytelling when I see it. Yeah, it was a community-theater-level production, not a Broadway show. I get that. The set pieces and costumes were minimal. The acting ranged all over from mediocre to really good. The choreography was minimal. No pyrotechnics or acrobatics. I get it, I get it. Now, I can forgive all of that. What I can’t forgive is the writers (Gilbert and Sullivan) wasting my time with shit that costs zero dollars to fix. Yeah ..read more

Smoking onstage?

i’m doing a show that requires smoking a tobacco pipe onstage. there’s a moment where smoke gets blown into someone’s face and it’s pretty important in the context of the script. does anyone have advice for how to achieve this? it can’t be any type of herb, and they don’t want us to use vapes either. i know there’s the talcum powder trick, but i need the smoke to come out of the actors mouth rather than the pipe itself. i’m open to more creative solutions, like i thought maybe we could use bubbles somehow? it’s a pretty ridiculous show so it doesn’t need to be realistic. ultimately, we could ..read more

Help Me Identify What Play This Is

When I was in elementary school, I participated in a play. I vividly remember portions of songs but not really the concept of the play. I’ve tried googling the lyrics I remember and I come up short. Thought I’d come to Reddit and try to figure it out. Some of the lyrics I remember are: “Let me tell you a story, I swear that it’s true. It’s old to me, but it’s new to you. It happened to some of us so long ago. Once upon a… once on a winter night.” All I can remember is the premise is a “village elder” type character telling a story to a younger person/child. Everything takes place in a snowy a ..read more

Question about watching plays outside most popular

I saw clip of a play called Natchland but it seems to be UK only. I wanted to watch it online, but I couldn't find a place to watch it. I resigned to the fact that it's probably too new to be online. However, I wanted to watch some plays. I usually only watch musicals but I want to expand into plays (outside classics like Shakespeare, as I've watched those plenty). Are there any places I can watch new plays (as in: written recently) and are focused on strong character drama and dialogue, rather than comedy? I want to explore new, non-comedic plays. Is there a place I can watch these? Or if yo ..read more
