The week of December 5-10, 2022 marks the twentieth anniversary of Playground, the School of Drama’s entirely student-run theater festival which takes place annually at the end of the fall semester. During Playground week, all drama classes are canceled, and within a four-day rehearsal period, students write, direct, design, perform, and produce original works. Performances and installations are open to the public and take place December 8-10 in various locations throughout the Purnell Center for the Arts.

Sheldon Epps found comfort in the theater from a young age. When he was 11, his family moved from an all-Black neighborhood in Los Angeles to a predominantly white and Jewish area of New Jersey – a culture shock to say the least. Mary Ellen Poole was officially installed as Carnegie Mellon University’s 13th Stanley and Marcia Gumberg Dean of the College of Fine Arts (CFA) in Kresge Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 29. CFA also welcomed new heads in the schools of architecture, drama and music at the afternoon ceremony, which was attended by a large crowd of family, friends, colleagues and students.

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards were presented last night in a live broadcast on NBC. The first trophy of the night, for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, went to Pittsburgh native and Carnegie Mellon University honorary degree recipient Michael Keaton for his portrayal of Dr. Samuel Finnix on Hulu’s “Dopesick.” It is the actor’s first Emmy Award. He received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from CMU in 2017.

Nominations for the 74th Emmy Awards were announced July 12, with 14 Carnegie Mellon University alumni and two honorary degree recipients receiving a total of 21 nominations for their work.
Alumni from the School of Drama‘s design programs took 15 of those nominations in set decoration, production design, art design, costume design and supervision, lighting direction and design, and music editing.
