For SINKs and DINKs, financial planning is … different.
What are SINKs and DINKs, you ask? SINK is an acronym for “single income, no kids.” And if you guessed that DINK stands for “dual income, no kids,” you’re right! But there’s much more to approaching financial planning for folks in the “no kids” camp than the simple fact that they don’t have children.
I’m sure you can imagine that people choose not to have children for as many reasons as others choose to add kiddos to their families. I define the “no ..read more

Take a look at the upper left-hand corner of this page. Did you know that the logo you see there is from 2015? This website is, too!
With our current “look” nearing a decade old, we decided to give FPFoCo a refresh. And we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to do just that. While we’re still the FPFoCo you know, we’ve been developing a whole suite of brand updates from our logo to our website and our letterhead to our business cards. As we’re putting the finishing touches on our branding refresh, we’re also preparing to share these updates with you.
We’re so excited about our new branding ..read more

Whether you’re considering buying your starter home, second home, vacation home, or forever home, I’d consider that purchase pretty important. In fact, I’d go so far as to call it a critical money moment. Now we’ve written about critical money moments and homebuying in particular before. But lately, I’ve gotten quite a few questions from renters, like …
I’d like to buy a home, but is it possible for me?
How much should I spend on a home?
How do I know when I can afford to buy a home?
If you’re asking similar questions or wondering whether it makes sense to buy as opposed to renting, read on. I ..read more

My name is Jason. I’m a 42-year-old father of three. In 2024, I will have spent more on my 12-year-old daughter’s dance education than it would cost for her to attend Colorado State University for the year while living at home. I am a dance dad. These are my confessions.
Setting the Stage (and paying for it, too)
For the uninitiated, what you just read probably sounds basically unbelievable. How could a child’s activity cost as much as an undergraduate education? More importantly — I hear you plead — why would anyone willingly spend that amount of money on it?
The answer to how is pretty stra ..read more

I’m back with an update on the 2024 dirty dozen: A list from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the 12 dirtiest tax scams and schemes of this year’s tax season. From having your money — or more — stolen via phishing, phone, or social media scams to engaging in abusive tax arrangements, these schemes could leave you in hot water with the IRS. In fact, they could lead to a higher chance of being audited — or even fines and criminal charges.

Some say that wealth is built with concentration and preserved by diversification.
So you’ve found yourself with a concentrated stock position. A large portion of your portfolio — or maybe the whole thing — is at the whim of how a single stock performs. Perhaps you also work for the company that issued that stock. You’ve got a great career with a solid employer, but depending on it for the vast majority of your income and assets just feels too risky. What should you do about all of that stock?
Let’s start with what a concentrated stock position is. How much is too much of one stock? If a sing ..read more

It’s estate planning month here at FPFoCo! Maybe we just worked together to update your beneficiaries or we got together to begin drafting your last will and testament. It could be that you completed your work with your attorney and we scanned your estate planning documents for our files. So you’re done, right?
Well, I don’t consider estate planning to be done until the probate process is complete. That’s the point when the court has closed out your estate and your assets have been transferred to your beneficiaries.
Just a reminder that we’re not attorneys. We don’t even play attorneys on TV ..read more
