Snow In The Pyrenees The Pyrenees have seen huge snowfalls over the past week, with some ski areas seeing as much fresh snowfall in the last 7 days as they had all winter to date. As a result, some of the region’s biggest ski areas like Spain’s Baqueira Beret (pictured top earlier today) and Formigal as well as Andorra’s Grandvalira (Pas de la Casa, Soldeu el Tarter and others) plan to open almost all of their terrain for the first time this winter this coming weekend. They report over a metre of snowfall this week, some as much as 145cm. Inevitably, all the snowfall arriving so quickly has al ..read more

Is St Johann in Tirol The Most Tirolean of Tirolean Resorts? Is St. Johann the most typically Tirolean of all the ski areas in Tirol? There’s a big choice of destinations in the world-famous Austrian ski province of course, so lots of competition for the title but St Johann starts off well by having ‘Tirol’ in its name – St Johann in Tirol being the full moniker.  St. Johann has long been one of the main destinations of Tirol, a market town with a copper and silver mining history dating back to before even Roman times. So it was a popular place to be even before skiing became popular in t ..read more

I hadn’t known what to expect and, with hindsight, I think that was probably for the best. La Gorzderette is a traditional competition akin to Gladiators on ice or It’s a Knockout on snow if any readers are old enough to remember that madcap TV show. The event takes place in a very chilly valley at a beautiful French hamlet called Champagny-le-Haut, the gateway to the Vanoise National Park in Savoie Mont Blanc. Surrounded by such impressive peaks as 3656 m high Grande Motte (famed for the Tignes ski area) and the Grand Crasse at 3,800 m as well as 100 mountains over 3000 m, it’s little wonder ..read more

Hurtling down a steep off-piste slope at full tilt I suddenly feel my skis launch high into a clear blue sky. Paragliding in Mèribel I’d been instructed to take on a sharp descent at full throttle, without any poles for control on a glorious Saturday morning in Meribel.  Before I know it, my skis are airborne as I gasp with the adrenaline pumping high in the Three Valleys.  Yet there was no need to brace myself for a painful landing on the final day of an amazing trip to the iconic resort in the French Alps. I’m having the time of my life circling like a bird of prey in my ..read more
