I first laid my eyes on an artwork of Benjamin John Coleman on Origami Caravan website, over a year ago.  He was auctioning off an original work of his, which was a wall hanging of intricate origami flowers.  It looked very organic and sculptural, unlike most other origami flower models.  I loved it.  You can still see the photo of it here: "Outcropping II" by Benjamin John Coleman.  So when I acquired the Origami Bonsai Kit by Benjamin John Coleman, I was very excited. This kit comes in a box with a full-color instructional book, a DVD, and folding papers in a vari ..read more

Origami Dress-Up Paper Dolls Review

It has been a few weeks since I picked up Origami Dress-Up Paper Dolls book.  I've already made a few dolls for myself and also helped some of my students make theirs with this book.  Since the book was imported from Japan, I paid a little more than how much I would've paid if I waited to buy it in Japan, but for me money was worth spent.  This book turned out to be just as good as the Amazon Japan review, or even better!  I love origami and I love fashion, so this is right up my alley. First of all, the designs of the dolls are absolutely adorable.  Here is a doll th ..read more

Review: LaFosse & Alexander's Dollar Origami

When I was gifted this Dollar Origami book by Origamido Studio recently, I was kind of dreading having to use icky old dollar bills.  Crisp new ones were hard to come by, as far as I knew.  But when I first opened the book, I was pleasantly surprised to find fake dollar bills to tear-out and use. I also learned from my local origami friend Janessa from Daily Dollar Doodle that if I wanted crisp new dollar bills I just need to call my bank to see if they have gotten a shipment of new bills. Dollar bill origami seems to have become more and more popular in the U.S. these days.   ..read more

Japanese Origami Kit for Kids is packed with models and papers that are so much fun! It is a great beginner kit for young children around age 7 and 12. It comes in a box containing a booklet, a variety of unique print origami paper, and "practice" dollar bill paper. The origami papers were most exciting to me; they are so unique, I've never seen anything like these elsewhere. There are 72 double-sided papers, which come in 12 different patterns and color variations. Most of these prints are Asian-inspired, such as beckoning cats, pandas, fans, sushi, rice bowls, tea pots, fish, etc ..read more

Review: Mind-Blowing Modular Origami by Byriah Loper

On Instagram I see tons of people posting modular origami, and many of them seem to only post this genre of origami. Personally, I'm not particularly into modulars; I prefer to fold out of one sheet, or when I fold modulars, it's folded out of less than 6 units. Well, because I'm a rather lazy folder. I tend to get tired of repetitive folding. But when I received Mind-Blowing Modular Origami by Byriah Loper from Tuttle Publishing, I felt inspired to try my hand at some of these models, since they look literally mind-blowing! There are instructions of 19 modular models in this book. 7 of ..read more

Review: Advanced Origami by LaFosse and Alexander

Advanced Origami by Michael LaFosse and Richard Alexander was first published in 2005 as a hardcover book. I didn't own it but had once borrowed from a friend and loved it. So when I received a pre-released, complimentary copy from Tuttle Publishing recently, I was pleasantly surprised to acquire it and learn that it was re-released as paperback. This updated version is lighter weight and includes a DVD.  Newly re-released paperback Advanced Origami has a new cover design too. 15 projects, which are all natural history subjects, and LaFosse's signature models are ..read more

Review: New Expressions in Origami Art by Meher McArthur

"We are living in the most exciting era of origami!" is a quote by my origami friend and a storyteller Kuniko Yamamoto, whom I've interviewed in Summer 2015 issue of The Paper. This art form has come so far since the 1950s, thanks to Akira Yoshizawa and recent technology advancement. I cannot agree with Kuniko more. This book New Expressions in Origami Art by Meher McArthur really proves it. It introduces 25 foremost origami artists, including: Joel Cooper, Erik and Martin Demaine, Giang Dinh, Vincent Floderer, Tomoko Fuse, Miri Golan, Paul Jackson, Beth Johnson, Eric Joisel, Goran Konjevod ..read more

Review: Akira Yoshizawa: Japan's Greatest Origami Master
Yuki's Origami Blog

In 2014, I had an opportunity to visit Sano Art Museum in Mishima, Japan for the exhibition of Akira Yoshizawa: The World of Creative Origami. Before that time, I had seen several of his artworks only in photographs and folded just one or two of his models. Of course, I've read and known about how Yoshizawa had taken a big part in development of modern origami, by creating thousands of new models, pioneering wet-folding technique, developing notational diagramming system, and promoting the art form worldwide by serving as a cultural embassador. I knew how important he was in the history of ori ..read more

I will be attending the OrigamiUSA Convention 2016

At the end of 2015, Regional Arts and Culture Council awarded me funds to help me attend the OrigamiUSA Convention in New York in June 2016!  After 9 years of teaching at Childpeace Montessori and Willowbrook, 100+ library classes, numerous visits to teach at elderly care facilities, correctional facilities and community events, it was a big milestone for me.  For many years I've wanted to attend this big annual convention, but it was expensive to travel all the way to New York from Portland to attend it so I never made it there.  I am so happy and grateful that RACC is g ..read more

My New Bathroom Decorations
Yuki's Origami Blog

Over the past year we got our bathroom remodeled.  I absolutely love how it came out to be!  McNearney Construction did an amazing job.  It used to be the least favorite room of the house; I lamented to use the old and not-so-functional room every day for over a dozen years.  But now it's absolutely the best room in the house.  It was worth a long wait.  Still a tiny, one-and-only bathroom in the house, but it has some really cool features like a radiant heated floor, a built-in soap cubby, motion sensing lights at floor/ceiling, a motion sensing flush t ..read more
