Wendt went fishing on Idaho’s Dworshak Reservoir on May 10 and ended up hooking into a chunky smallmouth bass. He measured the big bronzeback and released it. “On a rare day off, I caught up on the business of life, loaded the pups up, and went on a solo trip to Dworshak,” Wendt, a fishing guide for Reel Time Fishing, wrote in a Facebook post. “I completed my day with my personal best—23.5 inches by 18 inches ..read more

Washington State's new mentorship program is aiming to stem the tide of diminishing hunter numbers. Washington F&W photo Washington State, like other states across the country, has a problem with hunters: There aren’t enough of them. Fewer hunters means fewer adults teaching young people to hunt. That means fewer license sales and dwindling revenues for state wildlife management and conservation agencies. So, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is taking a number of measures, including the coordination of a recent Mentored Spring Turkey Camp, to boost participation and licens ..read more

How I Fish: Dave Whitlock

Dave Whitlock casts in a local trout stream. F&S My parents fished bait or used very large wooden lures on metal baitcasting rods. That didn’t interest me as a kid. I learned about fly fishing when I was about 8 or 9 from my granddad’s Field & Stream and his L.L. Bean catalogs. I saw these beautiful feathered lures, and I thought it was so neat to fish with something so pretty. I started catching fish on flies before I was a flyfisherman. As a kid, whenever I would run out of bait, I’d put some thread, grass, or cloth on my hook. I’d dap that in the water, and those sunfish would hi ..read more

Robert Loerzel via Twitter As sea monsters go, this one—a desiccated specimen that appears to have been dead for a while—seems less than, well, monstrous. Roughly two feet long, with a skull the size of a human fist, a narrow body, and skin that appeared “almost furry in places,” the mystery critter generated a good bit of confusion when its discoverer, Robert Loerzel, shared photos after running across it on the shores of Lake Michigan.   “I found this, um … THING at the Montrose Beach Dunes,” tweeted Loerzel, whose online bio describes him as a journalist, photographer, copy edi ..read more

What they caught was something even harder to find: An albino blue catfish that Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) officials say is extremely rare.   Fishing the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, the Reidts started ..read more

Mike Graham After chasing catfish for most of his life and trophy blues almost exclusively for the past 12 years, Knoxville, Tennessee, angler Mike Graham finally broke the 100-pound mark in a big way on April 17, catching a 107.8-pound blue catfish in Wheeler Lake, a reservoir on the Tennessee River in northern Alabama. Some anglers in Hawaii use drones to carry lures and baits well beyond casting range. Yessah Fishing As the sun sets on a Hawaiian island, an angler pulls up to a remote beach and unloads a 12-foot surf rod, a rod holder, and some dead squid. Normally, he can cast 60 yards or so with the outfit, but the yellowfin tuna he’s targeting are 300 yards out. No worries. He threads a squid onto a hook, attaches his line to a drone and, before long, he’s celebrating with a 3-foot tuna at his feet. But these types of celebration may not last very long, as the state of Hawaii has just moved legislatio ..read more
