The 70-year-old lead character of Juna Furniture is compared to various over-performing Hindi film heroes – Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sunny Deol. The Marathi-language movie is indeed a one-man show, written and directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and starring him as the septuagenarian crusading for the rights of his cohort.
Manjrekar’s Govind doesn’t tolerate bad behaviour, even standing up to neighbourhood goon Pakya (Upendra Limaye). When his beloved wife Suhas (Medha Manjrekar) dies from an easily preventable heart attack, Govind embarks on a war – against their only son, Abhay (Bhushan Pradh ..read more

The Supreme Court’s decision recognising the right of Indian citizens to be free from the adverse effects of climate change is being lauded as a massive victory for the climate justice movement. But the judgement needs to be viewed from the lens of cautious optimism.
While the court enshrined this new right within the scope of the fundamental right to life and the right to equality, it does not define the contours of what this right entails. It also does not specify what factors will be taken into consideration as Indian courts are increasingly called upon to balance competing considerations ..read more

Democracies have always had a knowledge problem, or at least an ignorance problem. Elites in ancient Athens complained about the ignorance of the hoi polloi, which means “the many”, and wondered whether it makes sense to entrust illiterate farmers and workmen with weighty decisions about war, legislation and justice in the courts, where there were no judges or lawyers. Accusers and defendants had to plead their own case before a jury made up of hundreds of Athenian men, who passed verdicts on grave matters like the death of Socrates without any legal experts to guide or check them. In 16th-ce ..read more

HS Prannoy’s heroics in the deciding quarter-final and semi-final ties, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty’s consistency, a young Lakshya Sen stepping up under pressure, Kidambi Srikanth’s famous jump smash to wrap up India’s win in the final against Jonathan Christie and the celebrations that followed are all still fresh in ..read more

That aphorism about how pursuing success at any cost is like making a deal with the devil? Late Night With the Devil is literally just that but a lot more too.
The horror movie is framed as found footage of an episode from the 1970s American talk show Night Owls with Jack Delroy. The purported recording traces the dizzying rise of the show’s host Jack (David Dastmalchian) and the dubious methods he uses to sweep the popularity stakes.
Jack’s big ploy for ratings dominance is a supernatural-themed episode that seeks to prove the existence of Satan and his helpers. Jack invites a psychic, a par ..read more

The EU is revamping its migration system, hoping to appease an ascendant far right by tightening border controls in the bloc and paying poorer nations to intercept immigrants before they ever reach its shores.
Its “Fortress Europe” tactic is drawing fire from left and right – sparking fears of migrant abuse as well as criticism of the European Union for failing to stem the rising number of illegal sea crossings.
Migration has been a hot topic since more than a million people – mostly Syrian – crossed the Mediterranean in 2015.
The EU has since tightened its laws and borders, emboldened by the ..read more
