Blank verse in general and iambic pentameter in particular are supposed to be defined by their rhythm of stressed and unstressed syllables. Something about this, however, has been bothering me for years, a question I've never been able to answer: does iambic pentameter remain iambic pentameter, even when it is read in a regional accent which changes the stress and pronunciation of the words? What happens, I wonder, if a poem based on accent placement encounters someone who places his accents elsewhere?
All said, I think that what I'm asking is, how does the poet who writes Blank Verse ensure ..read more

A while back I read a set of two poems that were presented together both about minor league baseball players. I believe that they were by the same author, but they were structured differently. Both had no distinct rhyme scheme, but one was in stanzas and the other was a longer continuous narrative. hi. i am going through a mental rough patch. i am having a lot of anxiety. i dont really have any experience reading any poetry. i do love ross gays book of delights. i am looking for something similarly feel-good. lighthearted/calming/wise/empowering and also accessible. i am navigating a relationship rough patch and would like to avoid anything too romantic. although if anyone has any recommendations for things that they have found helpful when going through something similar (relationship issues) that would be great too! thanks!

Hi! I am about to graduate with an BFA in visual art, and over the course of 4 years my practice has become very text/poetry based. I am interested in receiving an MFA in creative writing (with a poetry focus) later down the line. I am extremely novice when it comes to this world, since my current major is so vastly different.
What is admissions looking for when you apply to a writing MFA program? What do you recommend having under your belt in the poetry realm? I would love ANY and ALL advice that can be provided.
Thank you in advance!
