The west coast of Madeira is lush and fertile. The flora and fauna are rich and diverse. Due to the tropical climate on this part of the island, many fruits such as bananas and mangos which would normally grow in tropical climates thrive here in abundance. Located in the middle of the North Atlantic ocean closer to the African continent than Europe the island is steeped in history. Back in the old days the island used to be one of the largest producers of sugar cane rum aka Madeira rum. Our local guide told us there were used to be around 50 rum distilleries on the island. Now there were only ..read more

Not to be confused with the River Avon which is located in Wiltshire, the south of England. This is the Avon River. Located in central Christchurch, Canterbury in the south island of New Zealand. The river was actually named after the Avon River in Scotland. The Deans brothers, one of the early European settlers in the area requested the name in honour of their grandfather’s farm in Ayshire hills, Scotland. The river banks are lined by urban parks. With plenty of greenery punting on the Avon is a relaxing activity to enjoy the views of Christchurch from a different perspective. The green strip ..read more

I stood there on top of the Whakaraupo Reserve slowly taking in the stunning views of the Lyttelton Harbour. Lyttelton is also known as the gateway to Canterbury region located in the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Before the pandemic, this harbour would have been frequented by cruise ships. It didn’t look like there was a cruise ship that day, however there were a few ships carrying container goods. Lyttelton port handles the movement of exported and imported goods for much of the South Island. The turquoise water drew me in and many people who visited the area that day. It wa ..read more

Oban is a hidden gem located in the West Highlands of Scotland. This seafood capital is a three-hour train ride from Glasgow through scenic routes. Truly relaxing and enjoyable the train ride is highly recommended if you are happy to leave the car behind. The harbour is scenic and from here you can take ferry boats to some of the Inner Hebrides islands such as Lismore, Isle of Mull, and Iona amongst others. It may be small but Oban is charming and pretty. The harbour is the heart of the action. Stay central in Oban to experience its unique atmosphere and the friendly locals. Frigiliana, a small Andalusian village is a charming place to explore in the autumn months when the summer crowds have left. The cute small streets with white houses all around are fun to look at. I love the pots and plants that many residents use to decorate the exterior of their homes. And those door facades… I just can’t get enough of them. I hope the pictures speak for themselves ..read more

It is often not the first city you think of exploring. However, even if you’ve never visited Liverpool you are likely to have heard of it because it is where the Beatles came from and it is also home to one of the world’s most famous football clubs. A visit to the Royal Liver building, a Grade I-listed building by the Liverpool harbour is a must if you would like to appreciate the scale of the city and get a 360-degree view of the city. Alternatively you can also climb the stairs inside the Liverpool Cathedral to get a panoramic view of the city. It’s a perfect destination for a long weekend ..read more
