A cold front swept through the region (swept, odd we use that word for this phenomenon) last night and many of us woke to fog and some icy accumulation on our patios. For the next few days, a wintry mix remains possible, and even some snow accumulation by Saturday morning. Let's set the stage with an hourly planner for both temperatures and precipitation for Denver. See the temperatures top out in the middle 40s for us today, then into the lower 50s for Friday, and back into the 40s for Saturday. So, although cool we aren't talking about an overly cold pattern. We are looking at a wetter patt ..read more

As of noon Monday, a slow-moving upper level low pressure was situated over central Utah. On the front side, we're beginning to see some surface low pressure develop as well. This storm is bringing a lot of wind with it this afternoon, along with some widespread fire danger. As the system pivots east tonight into Tuesday, there will be a quick shot at moisture. As of now, short and mid-range data seems to have a bit of disagreement as to how much moisture we'll be able to squeeze out... let's dig into the details. Starting off, wind gusts Monday will have to be top of mind with many folks, es ..read more

Sure, you could see a shower pass by today, but the odds are not overwhelming. Once this little disturbance passes us, we are in for quite a warming trend the remainder of the week into the weekend, when we could have our first 80-degree day of the year so far. Here's a quick timeline of both temperatures and rain chances: Notice the rain chances are pretty much just this afternoon into the evening. Here's a look at the hourly showers across the state until midnight. With that, there will be some accumulations. So, first, let us look at the total possible precipitation, then the snow for tho ..read more

The State of the Atmosphere: Is the remainder of April set to be a dud for active weather?

Had ourselves a big ol' windbag this weekend, huh!? It could have been a good one (snow maker) if we had this system to our south rather than north - parts of Wyoming had blizzard conditions just about the entire weekend. Regardless, I think we're all happy to kick most of those winds to the curb this week. We'll be under the influence of a weak area of low pressure to our south the next few days, leading to slightly below normal temps to start the work week, gradually warming into next weeken ..read more

The wind event continues across the state, particularly the Northern Front Range and the Eastern Plains; wind warnings continue through noon and 6 pm, respectively. As the wind event calms, we focus on cloud cover for Monday's partial eclipse viewing. First, the wind. Here are the Sunday morning observations from the weather service - some of which topped 90 mph! Source: https://x.com/NWSBoulder/status/1776987187495522627 Image: The wind threat continues through the day but does calm progressively. The warnings are shown here. Again, if all goes to schedule, those warnings will expire for me ..read more

We are tracking the next storm system that will bring rain, snow, and wind to the state by the weekend, but ahead of that... warm temperatures (and yes, high fire danger)! Denver finally hit the 70°F on Wednesday (71°F officially) marking the latest first 70°F day in over 40 years for the city. We should have little issue making it back above 70°F today and tomorrow before changes arrive Friday night into Saturday. Here is the latest hourly planner for the Denver area: While temperatures will be quite pleasant over the next two days, the wind and low humidities will mean an uptick in fire dan ..read more

As we settle down after a busy weekend, know that Monday will be impacted by the weather. Those returning to the metro areas from the mountains will have snow to drive through Monday and that will turn into chances of rain and snow as they move from the foothills into the city. Let's kick off this blog's images with an hourly planner for Denver's temperatures and chances for precipitation. First, notice that temperatures hardly budge on Monday, staying mostly in the lower 40s. Tuesday into Wednesday, we see a rapid warming trend hit as chances for showers drop. Turning to that moisture timeli ..read more

Oh what a start to the year it's been across the region. Thanks to this month's monster snow, the Denver area is boasting a huge surplus for accumulated precipitation year to date. The city (DIA) has picked up 3.39" since January 1, which is more than double the 1.54" we see on average through March 27th, and and the second wettest start to the year for the city in the last 20 years. We also have yet to hit the 70°F mark in Denver this year. The last time we reached 70°F was on December 6, 2023 with a high of 71°F in the city. We've got a shot at it this weekend, though most guidance suggests ..read more

A potent, and quick-hitting system will arrive later today and deliver a wallop of snowfall to some locations. No, not like the big storm a little over a week ago, but enough to be a pain for drivers on Sunday evening when returning from spring break or kicking off their vacation. This will also leave a mess for some of the commuters Monday morning. Keep an ear tuned in...you may hear some thunder as this rolls through. (Thunder, indicating convection, means we could create some small pockets of heavier rain/snow than indicated below). First, here are the active alerts for the state, quite num ..read more
