Has anyone planned an arangetram at a high school auditorium in the DC/MD/VA area? It seems to be highly discouraged amongst serious dance schools here (for some strange reason; in Atlanta where I am from it is the norm) but due to schedules of the musicians/cost, high schools are the most flexible option. Has anyone done it recently at just a regular public high school in the area? submitted by /u/Better_Sun_8622 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I'm a kuchipudi student and my rangapravesham is in 3 months. I have been struggling a lot with keeping my eyes steady, especially during abhinaya. I don't realise it but because of this I'm not able to establish my movements properly. Does anyone have any advice on how to overcome this? Also if any of you have some interesting poses do share them Thanks :) submitted by /u/Bitter-Shift-812 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Doing classical Indian dance as a white person?

Hey! I've been doing Bharatanatyam for some years now, but there is one thing that's been bothering me since the beginning: Am I engaging in cultural appropriation when I do Bharatanatyam as a white girl? Some context: I was working in Tamil Nadu and got into contact with the dance there, as soon as I was back in Europe I was excited that there is a teacher in my city and I picked it up. So my teacher is white and most students are too, but she has been doing research on Bharatanatyam and Devadasis and is very well informed and engaged in the Indian community fyi so she really knows what she ..read more

Hi everyone! I’m a 28F and I want to practice bharatanatyam often because as I get older, it’s harder to keep up. How do you guys do it with work and other committments? How often do you practice and where do y’all practice? Can I dance in the gym? submitted by /u/CHANELLEFUNGIRL2000 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Getting back in shape

Hi everyone, I’m preparing for my arangetram that’s 6 months away. The problem is I was in top form last year and due to my exams I’ve lost it. It’s been almost 8 months and it’s seems to have not come back. I can’t sustain my araimandi for long periods of time and it’s making me super upset. I’ve been practicing everyday for the past month and a half and I’m not seeing any results. I’m starting to freak out. I don’t know if I’m up for this ?? submitted by /u/Intrusivethotss-3 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
