What determines the use of either Tyvek or plain plastic vapor barrier underneath the bottom plates on the foundation?

Hi guys, I asked the same question to my foreman I couldn't really under stand his explanation due to limited English skill. I began my career as a framer last year. I've noticed that before installing bottom plates on a concrete foundation, we use a gasket (sill sealer?) and then either plastic (vapor barrier?) or Tyvek on top of that. I'm curious about why we sometimes use one or the other. Thank you. submitted by /u/takuchang1988 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Looking for advice regarding career path

I'm torn between going to a school nearby for either 2 or 4 semesters for Carpentry or just looking for an Apprenticeship. I have my GI Bill and the VA that would cover my schooling and housing so it wouldn't put me back really anything. I was a diesel mechanic and a lineman Apprentice before so my experience with carpentry is limited to using tools and basic wood working from various shop classes. I'm familiar with the union and how things are ran on the work site when it comes to pace and what is expected from me as an Apprentice. I was extremely disappointed with the lineschool I attended ..read more

Hey y'all aspiring carpenter/builder here. I am sort of an experienced apprentice, I took up with this crew because the old guy I was working with couldn't keep me working. Anyways, I've been working for a few weeks with these guys on other properties that are being flipped, doing demo. i was called over to this house to take up plastic this plastic protecting the floor and I was really shocked by the quality of work at this place. Trim is all 10' mdf 1x6 's. This stuff is all hanging off the walls almost a quarter inch at places. Floor has gaps all over the place. There's no shoe molding ..read more

Exterior Stair Tread Replacement Help

Hey group, This will be my first time attempting as well as replacing the old exterior stair treads to my house. The treads are wood (Not sure what kind) and I believe they were pressure treated as they've lasted for around 20 years with minimal care and maintenance knowledge, except repaints every 2-3 years. There is now rotting and splitting down the grains on quite a few of them so definitely looking to replacing the ones with splits and rots. I've checked on some Youtube videos but I thought I'd post here to maybe get some 2nd opinions and suggestions. The tread dimensions are 1.5" thick ..read more
