Towards Joy: Welcome to Euphrosyne Corner Farm
Work And Play, Day By Day
by Heidi

Is anyone out there still reading blogs?  Just in case, so I thought it would be a good time to explain why I changed my social media accounts to Euphrosyne Corner Farm.  As with all good ventures, a time comes when it must be named.   Originally we planned to name our little homestead farm Opus Ludus Farming- a Latin play on my blog name (it means Work & Play Farming).   After all, to us, this felt like an extension of the life we were already living.  Then we came across something that we all agreed was the most perfect fit- Euphrosyne Corner Farm. Works of Mercy During COVID19
Work And Play, Day By Day
by Heidi

When our country began shutting down back in March due to COVID19, I admit the works of mercy were pretty far from my mind.  Sure, I wrote a book about the topic but everything else seemed more urgent! Blessed to be safe financially and physically, we had to carve out a new life without normal activities and (painfully) without access to the sacraments.  We had to adjust to college classes taken and taught from home and special needs without our normal backups.  Our close knit Catholic community of families was forced online. As I’m sure many of you can relate, our early uncer ..read more

Family Quarantine Project
Work And Play, Day By Day
by Heidi

So I’m going to guess you’ve been stuck at home for a little while now.  Yeah, me too.  Everywhere I turn, I wonder if anyone is talking about anything except quarantine and COVID19! For some families right now, the fear and anxiety is primarily economic.  For others, health related.  For still others, social (academic, religious, communal, etc).  We are all experiencing this time in a unique way and space.  It is placing a burden on individuals and families to creatively find solutions to communal problems. I know right now, for our family, the primary struggle ..read more

Mission: Family Lenten Study
Work And Play, Day By Day
by Heidi

I always start the season of Lent with big ambitions- often too many ambitions to be honest with you!  (Soup for Lent, anyone?) Last year I realized that what we really needed was something to help us stay focused on the core components of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving while drawing us closer together as a family. We needed a study that is easy to grab and go- without too much prep work or clean up.  Something that would bring us closer to God and to each other. Too good to be true, right?! Wrong! This year I put together a resour ..read more

Montessori Geography In The Second Plane
Work And Play, Day By Day
by Heidi
4y ago
The Montessori approach to geography and culture study is a favorite of mine and of my kids.   Puzzle maps and continent boxes in the first plane are replaced by pin maps, research, and more in the second plane of development.  Long past when they have transitioned to the classical approach we use in the third plane, my kids come back to these materials and the concepts they have learned through this approach. (If you aren’t sure what I mean by planes, the first plane of development covers the ages of birth through six, the second s ..read more

Faster Success In Your New Montessori Homeschool
Work And Play, Day By Day
by Heidi

When I get emails and messages from families with a new Montessori homeschool, the number one struggle they share is implementation.  They armed themselves with philosophy, prepared their environment, and they were totally ready to jump in. Only it isn’t going the way they hoped. In most cases, the problem is not with what the parents are attempting to teach but rather with what they have forgotten their child does not yet know. Here are three important concepts to remember in starting a new Montessori homeschool, and one way to imp ..read more

Teaching Homeschool Art
Work And Play, Day By Day

Teaching homeschool art when I’m not very artistic?  This has been one of my perennial homeschool challenges.  I love art.  I love teaching.  But put together teaching and homeschool art? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate good art.  Give me a pair of knitting needles and yarn and I might even be able to create something beautiful. But teaching it?  Totally different story! Here are three resources for teaching homeschool art through high school, including a brand new one that I’m quite excited about (and a limited time offer that get ..read more

Montessori First Holy Communion Preparation
Work And Play, Day By Day
by Heidi
4y ago
In the last week the children go into retreat for five days before their first Communion…They live apart from their companions, and a portion of the garden is set aside and reserved for them.   This isolation is, however, neither sad nor wearisome, for innumerable proofs of love reach the small solitaries.   The older boys in the school give all their attention to the preparation for the solemn Mass…and the music being practiced in their honor sweetly reaches the ears of t ..read more
