November 2020, Quesnel, BC The bike had a set of studded tires which I would find out are absolutely necessary on the frosty winter roads ahead. Since temperature would be great for any foods, I stocked up on some of the nice pre-made soups at Safeway Even though it was the only bike shop in town, the cycle logic would have been my first choice! Great service and they were totally cool with trading in my old tires you get a soup and your get a soup!! I think I ended up with 7 of the pouches, all tucked in non-crushable storage locations on my bike (mostly in the frame bag) I like how they a ..read more

November 2020 Not quite sure what my plan was but I couldn’t quite get past the “writer’s block” equivalent of my video project. I had big plans to start re-doing the first episodes in a different format and with the right soundtrack but few hard drive problems put this on the backburner. Before I knew it it was November and I really had to get moving, I missed some of the best mosquitoe-less riding in the fall and one may say it was a bit too late to be riding… after all it’s been 5 years since I’ve had a real Canadian winter. Darren whom I met during the summer offered to drive me out of to ..read more

Pipelines, powerlines and logging roads (Terrace to Prince George

Septermber, Terrace, BC Having previously ridden most of the Yellowhead highway I would definitely avoid it. It has a good shoulder but definitely too much traffic. Leaving Terrace I headed toward a powerline road that should be able to take me near Smithers. There were few options to get into the alpine and I took the first road going up. It was slow going with some rain on and off and I was able to see the powerline that I will be following. It should be the same powerline bringing power from Kemano to other parts of BC. To my surprise a jeep drove down and they told me that there is a ni ..read more

August 2020 With the ferry still 10 days away I will have time to see all these little roads leading off from the Bella Coola valley and who knows, maybe even a hot shower at some point. The first on the list was Odeguard Falls and Purgatory Lookout. Camping is always easy in Canada, pick a logging road and go until the first flat pullout. The road, like many roads in the area had a “road closed” sign, indicating a washout further along but few locals told me that it was in okay condition. It was a rather gloomy day with few sunny breaks and rain from time to time. Occasionally the clouds bro ..read more

August 2020 I was a bit hesitant of going on the highway but it seemed to be fairly quiet and with a bit more air pressure the 4” tires roll quite well. It’s like having two different bikes in a way. I followed a tip from the campers at Miner Lake and went looking for some waterfalls, the turnoff at the garbage dump led through an old fire and toward a nice valley. Eventhough I would be going along the highway there are many lake rec sites which would offer great camping. Big Stick Lake was not one of them, to my surprise after a rugged road I found a whole bunch of RV’s and campers and mus ..read more

August 2020 By now I have realized that going along the forgotten trails of the Coast Mountains and the Chilcotin would be impossible by bike. Instead I can follow the roads, old and new when available and still get close to the big mountains. It’s usually in and out (maybe the same way) but it’s the only way to do it on a bike. I still spend a lot of time taking a zoom photo and transferring it to my phone to look for any hints of trails or roads. There is a network of old trails into the Charlotte Alplands but that may need to wait for another summer and on foot/packraft. There was an old ..read more

Looking for Trails and Lakes

July 2020 It was a windy night overlooking the east edge of the Coast Mountains and nearing the end of the Coast Mountain Bike Route. I had spoken to Skyler few times and never asked him if he attempted to follow these old trails and roads showing up on the backroad mapbook. All the heavy stuff was moved to the backpack, leaving the bike (including the frame bag) as light and maneuverable as possible. On the downhill the trail faded in and out and I got the feeling that the main horseback trail is somewhere else. I often examined my track but in general, with the fat wheels there was barely ..read more

Bikepacking Chilko Lake

July 2020, British Columbia There was at least 15 days of food on the bike and I wobbled and creaked my way out of the Chilko Lake campground It is always a nice ride in the Nemiah Valley and I took the road to Tusuniah Lake. I still can’t figure out if these are wild or not but they sure do behave like that. No hello, just run into the forest from the moment they see me, this one hung around to asses the wobbly creature coming up the road. All the planes at the lodge were lined up and I really wanted to say hi and see if Bonnie is still here to thank her for that breakfast 5 years ago. But ..read more

Canoepacking Chilko Lake

July 2020 Chilko Lake, British Columbia, Canada It was one of those mornings that if you didn’t have a canoe you wish you did. It’s my third time on a canoe with the first two being an hour outings in little lakes. the lake was a mirror for most of the day and we stopped at the first hints of wind. There were many mountains dominating the landscape, each taller and more mysterious than the other. Then 4 women paddled from the far end of the lake, they have been going for 6 days and went to the very end. They know a thing or two about canoeing and have done the inside passage. It was a good ..read more

July 2020, British Columbia Canada After 15-16 days of riding from Lillooet I met up with Darren, a friend from Prince George for a resupply and to explore the area on bike, foot and maybe by canoe. We first got in touch talking about the Canol Trail and he’s been involved in clearing and maintaining the Mackenzie Trail and knows a lot of the little gems of British Columbia. we weren’t able to leave until well after noon after all the packing and organizing but after 2 ~400meter climbs (the second one being a mosquito induced uphill pedaling frenzy) we found a nice spot with a fire ring. The ..read more
